Been curious about the Weissenborn having played various guitars and being a fan of John Fahey. Up until now most have been selling for more than I wanted to spend having never actually played one. Saw that Luna was offering a couple of models in my price range and decided to take the plunge. Became an instant convert and am now selling my Dobro. The technique is a bit different than the Dobro, but am anxious to hone my slide technique on the Weissenborn. So far, for the price I would recommend the Luna models for those wanting try that style of guitar.

I'm glad to have the recommendation for Luna's Weissenborn. Many people are looking for an inexpensive Weissenborn to start with.
You've really committed to the Weissenborn, I see. I can understand that, being smitten myself. What tuning are you playing in? And what kind of music?
I have a Weissenborn in D, and a kona in C6, and am learning songs from an eclectic C6 book by Doug Beaumier. For open D, I'm using Troy Breningmeyer's lessons.

Shortly after getting the Weissenborn, I came across Ed Gerhard playing 'Killing the Blues' in C. I am now obsessed in learning that song, so the guitar will stay in C for a while.
I got into fingerpicking after being introduced to it by a friend back in the mid-70s and after the LP 'Best of John Fahey'. Sat down and learned most of that LP with the help of the book put out by Guitar Player Magazine. Around the same time also I discovered Mississippi John Hurt, Rev Gary Davis and MerleTravis and did my best to learn a little of each of their styles.
recently, I have been concentrating on some fingerpicking ukulele and the style of Lyle Ritz along with trying to adapt some Fahey tunes to the uke.

Welcome to the group Jim. Boy can I relate to Ed Gerhard's take on Killing The Blues. That song also really got to me and what this instrument has to offer. Since then I've discovered all kinds of neat songs played on the Weissenborn.

Which songs, tigchrome? You can count me in on Ed Gerhard's version of Killing the Blues - that song just knocks me out. John Wilde has a cover of it on You Tube that makes it easier to learn. He doesn't have Ed's touch and timing, but it's easier to see the notes he's playing. Fahey is a favorite and Merle Travis too.
Jim, I play ukulele too and love Lyle Ritz. I'm taking lessons from Steven Strauss, who has many you tube videos with his band, Friends of Old Puppy. It never would have occurred to me to play Fahey on the uke.

Hi Liz, just the one's I've seen on You Tube mostly. Some from members here. I especially like the ones that have been traditionally been played on resonator and then adapted on Weissenborn. The two that come to mind instantly are Sheebeg and Sheemore by bahilton, and Troy's Shady Grove.

Thanks, Tig. I'm asking partly out of curiosity and partly because I think the Weissenborn repertoire is being defined right now. What it's shaping up to be deserves its own topic, I think.

I keep finding so many things to play on these instruments that I really need to start making a list. A year or two ago I have a medley of old Anglican hymns that I thought sounded pretty cool, but I figured I'd used that concept up. But a month or so ago I started playing another one and soon had a new medley that I played in the SWSGA show in Phoenix. And a cool little version of "I'll Fly Away" (that also made it into my set) that I swear my baritone weiss made up by itself. Now I've discovered that both of those take on a whole new life on my Kona. Any number of the old folky tunes I started doing in my teens have come back to life for me since I got my first weiss. Fahey is a great influence for anyone who wants to get into these instruments - he was doing stuff on his Kona way back - I had no idea what kind of guitar he was playing.
I highly recommend the UK's Kevin Brown, who is doing a tremendous variety of stuff on weiss (mykevinbrown.com) - Kevin is undergoing heart surgery having collapsed on the tennis court, and is very optimistic about the outcome…..I bet a few cd sales would cheer him up! I think of Kevin as very much someone who represents the future of the weissenborn.
