hello Liz,
I do have a weissenborn style guitar. I've been playing for about 6 months or so. It's been very Interesting trying to figure out what to bring over from reso playing and what to leave behind. I have been playing in G , just alittle nervous about that D Man that's tight ! Afraid a string might break and take an ear off LOL!
I do have a question to ask. the weis a bought is a large body, it's solid mohagany, but there are no markings anywhere not even on the tuners. The person I bought it from had no idea either. I know a guy who builds guitars and he said that who ever built it knew what they were doing. Do you know if the Asian builders normaly do not mark there guitars? The frets are not raised up and I don't know if that's common practice on weis's or if that might help to know who made it. Perhaps there's a place that i'm not looking. It's not a big concern for me, but would like to know

PUTZIN, we *love* a mystery. Can you post some pictures of your guitar? Ive never done it myself, but I think you first upload the photos to your homepage then go to the upper righthand corner of this page, where it says "linked content." Odds are good someone can identify your guitar.
Your Weissenborn sounds like the string gauges are too high for dobro G tuning (GBDGBD). Weissenborns are usually built too light to take a set of 56-13 strings up to dobro G. When I use that tuning on mine, I lighten up the gauges significantly so I don't get a bellying bridge. What gauges are you using?
Many players have the same dilemma as you: It's hard to leave behind all the licks and songs you know on dobro. Although it's not a tuning I use myself, some people tune low g: DGDGBD. The top 4 strings are just like on the dobro, but you get that low D on the bass.

DADF#AD It's lower tuning than GBDGBD. Here's a video you can tune to (even though Troy is not using a Weissenborn).

That low G tuning I mentioned (DGDGBD) will also take a lot of the tension off the gauges you are using. Leave the 4 highest strings where they are and just tun down the 5th and 6th strings down. The 6th string D is an octave lower than the 4th string D and the 5th string G is an octave lower than the 3rd string.
If you want to stay in GBDGBD, I can look up the string gauges for you, just let me know. I think you'd only need to swap out the 5th and 6th strings.

Welcome PUTZIN - you are going to love that tuning, and 16-56 the gauges I used for my 25" scale weiss-style guitars. I just buy D'addario EJ-42's by the fistful, and use them on my resos and weissenborns. Works for me.
I'd also like to see a picture of your guitar. Not having raised frets is pretty common, by the way.
