I read that the Asher Acoustic Hawaiian strings were made by La Bella on Asher’s website.

It appears that La Bella actually makes a couple different G and D sets for the Weissenborn that are not branded as Asher’s. They also appear to be less expensive than the Asher set.

The biggest difference is that the Asher set uses a lighter gauge for most of the strings, excluding the 3^rd string which uses the .028w vs the .027w on the La Bella set.

Asher Strings

(AH6-14).014p .017p .028w .036w .046w .058w

La Bella Strings

D Tuning:
HD-1560 (.015p .018p .027w .038w .048w .060w)
HD-1768 (.017p .022p .027w .045w .054w .068w)

G Tuning:
HG-1558 (.015p .018p .024w .039w .047w .058w)
HG-1762 (.017p .019p .027w .045w .054w .062w)

Anyone try these, as I would like to compare? My go-to string for a while has been the John Pearse 3140, and the 3160. However, I have noticed that the last batch I got, have died within a couple of weeks, and have started to discolor.

I am curious to hear other Weissenborn player’s string gauge preference. I for one like a heavier gauge first string such as a .018p, I also like a .027w+ on the third string (especially for Low G tuning).

	Bob Blair says: 2/25/2014 7:13:09 PM I have moved to lighter strings on my 25" weissenborn-style axes, which I mostly have in the D tuning. I actually find the D'Addario EJ 42 redo sets quite serviceable - 16, 18, 28, 35, 45, 56. I know that Carroll Benoit recommended slightly heavier string on my Cajunborne. I went with lighter strings on my first weissenborn after corresponding with Kevin Brown about it - he said he uses a standard 13-56 phosphor bronze set, but that he chucks the 13, puts the second string (usually a 15) on to and then substitutes in a plain 17 or 18 for the second. Comes out quite close to the EJ 42's, and once I noticed that I tried them and liked them, both for my CC and the Benoit.. On my Celtic Cross Kona I put a 15 on top instead of the 16 that comes with the set.
