John Pearse Weissenborn String tension

From guitarsnrotts on 3/1/2014 2:25:37 PM

Having recently received a Luna Weissenborn Lap Steel, I decided to almost immediately change out the stock strings. It came with what were basically light strings (12-53). It just didn't give enough tension for the C tuning I wanted to use so I replaced them with a set of John Pearse Weissenborn D Tuning Strings #3160 (15-60). Great tone and feel but was wondering about string tension, having read that anything over 165 lbs might be a problem. I've messed around with various online string tension calculators but have been unable to come up with numbers that make sense. I'm assuming that if the strings are considered OK for a D tuning, they should be fine for C. Any thoughts or experiences with these strings?

Great question! I'm about to do the same thing to my Pogreba Weissenborn. I've been using a set of medium gauge guitar strings (13-56) with a .15 instead of a .13. The guitar sounds fabulous in D, but needs higher tension in C.

If the string tension feels right to you with the Pearse set, and the top around the bridge isn't bellying up, I'd say you're good. At least, that's how I'm going to decide.

I've never had much luck with those tension calculators either. Maybe someone here can help with that part. You could also post in the main forum about using string tension calculators and see if someone can help.
