purchase quandry: Un-named weissenborn or Vintage Bronson squareneck

From mstuartev on 5/9/2016 5:01:13 PM

I realize this sort of thing is very subjective, but thought I'd tap into the general group mindset.

I'm thinking of picking up a cheaper lap style instrument. Maybe to use, maybe to give to my son.

I've found (both online) a mystery 'unnamed' weissenborn (woods are not specifically listed but maybe birch or something on top and sapelle back?) says it is from the last 15 years. About $300. I've also seen a nice looking Bronson squareneck (birch?) in good shape for a teeny bit less. Can't play them prior to buying. The Bronson could be returned less shipping. Haven't played a squareneck reg guitar, but am curious.

What would you choose if you were a gamblin' lap steelin' fool?

I'd go with the Weissenborn..

I'd probably go with the squareneck - my reasoning is that you could probably still have fun with a inferior squareneck even if it's poorly built, and it would be easier to tweak and mod if required, but a poorly built weissenborn would just be unpleasant and issues would be harder to rectify. But I'm not a gamblin' lap steelin' fool. :)

Really depends what you want to play. Don't think you will be able to put just any tuning on the Weiss they cannot take high string tension. So if you are used to a lap steel you might be happier with a square Neck in dropped E or open G.
