New Short Scale Weiss from Rance at Lazy River

From mstuartev on 9/7/2016 12:30:13 PM

Woot!

I jumped on one of Rance's new short scale Weissenborns that he has put together. Clean as a whistle as is always the case with Lazy River builds. It fills out the stable (I now have a standard, baritone/long scale, and a short scale).  It is really like a parlor guitar. Very quick player, very good for single note melody runs. Not a ton of low end, but it's there. Not really a sussssstaining lap piano... but that's not the point. Has a lovely rustic tone, slightly nasally (probably due to size), but in a very sweet way. At points along the fret board it emits very subtle haunting rings and reverbs. New discoveries every day. Very responsive to the steel. A lot of fun.

I ran it thru open D and open E tuning using more or less standard Weiss strings (15-60). Then tried some alt tunings I discovered at Hollowneck.com - EBEEBE (E Unison), and now it is in something I've never really played with - a '6th' tuning, in my case E6 (EBEG#C#E). While this is more Hawaiian-esque, I'm having a blast discovering bluesy, funky, even afro-ish stuff in there.

As far as pics, I believe the one he featured in his 'feeler' posts recently is the one I got. All mahogany.

I am trying to get my recording rig back together. If I do, I will post some sound files.

I know that some other forum members might have jumped on his recent project to build some short scale weiss's. If any of you are out there and have rec'd., do post your reactions to them

Tanks

Mark E
