ive played pedal, lap and dobro for many years but only very recently got my first weissenborn ... a 26' style 1. it's in the shop getting some loose braces glued.

The thing to be careful of is total string tension. The established guideline with Weissenborn Style1-4 x-braced guitars is 165ft/lbs total tension (ladder-braced guitars like Schiresons usually can't handle that amount). Most of the commercial sets I've seen - Pearse the most common - don't make tension data easy to find (or, in most cases, found at all), and many dadf#ad sets I've seen (again, I mention Pearse - not condemning them, just because they're so common) would appear to include gages that, unless string construction is very unusual, would far exceed 165lbs (the dgdgbd tuning may require totally diffeent gages - I don't use that tuning so I can't be sure, but I'd suggest checking a gage chart to select the appropriate string gage for each note). You can find both gage guideline and tension data on D'Addario strings and some Martin strings, so I generally buy some sets, break them up and use parts of them combined with some specific singles (the same type with wound strings - with plain steel it really doesn't matter). Standard resonator sets don't have the right gages for dadf#ad tuning, so that isn't a solution either. Until all string manufacturers publish tension data I stick with single strings from manufacturers who publish the data. Hope that helps.

I've used the Pearse 3120L for low G tuning with good result. Not being much of an open D player, I can't really speak to that use.

I believe the NewTone Hawaiian strings were built for exactly your concern, however, they are like playing rubber bands from my standpoint.

To add to my post above, here's a link to D'Addario's complete line tension guide. In the first couple of pages there's a string tension calculator equation that even a math-phobic like me can use. ;-) It's a fairly quick way to calculate tension based on gage, scale length, pitch and string weight per inch. Most of the on-line "plug-in" calculators (D'Addarios included) seem to come up with some weird numbers, while doing it yourself seems to match the published data pretty closely.

I really like the gauges of True mediums from D'Addario and GHS. These are designed for DADGAD tuning so the 3rd, 4th, & 5th strings area lighter gauge than standard mediums so giving a more balanced tension under the slide. I've just switched to GLS LJ40TM's (see last thread) & they sound superb on my Tim Kill Blackwood. The tension comes out at about 148lb in DADF*AD so shouldn't damage an old Weiss.
Incidentally the D'Addario Pro tension calculator has gone completely haywire recently !

i have a set of new tone's on the way ... i'll start there. hopefully guitar will be done soon. maybe i'll find a set off the shelf that works for me or maybe i'll be piecing together sets on my own. hard to know till i have a chance to play the guitar which i haven't at all .. it came to me bag-of-bone-like ; )
