strings for a 1924 Weissenborn

From houpts on 10/13/2017 7:31:35 AM

Hi,

I am about to buy a ca.1924 Weissenborn with two repaired top hairline cracks.  I am wondering what strings to use.  I currently use D'Addario EJ 17's (medium phosphor bronze) with a 14 on the first string on my 1927 Weissenborn, but is that too heavy for a pre-1927?  Thoughts?  Thanks

John Pearse Weissenborn strings. There will be more flex in the strings than Medium, but it shouldn't take much effort to get used to.

I've used those on a Lazy River, but if I went with those, which gauge should I use?

By the way, the John Pearse strings I used on the Lazy River were a little strong. I had to get the bridge re-glued

I got a Lazy River in February 2015 and Rance shipped it with JP 3120L's.

I changed them for the first time Monday and replaced them with the same set. No problems.

This question is really about strings for an original ca 1924 Weissenborn. Thanks!

Also, does anyone know how to tell 1923 from 1924 from 1925 Weissenborn?

I was at Austin Vintage Guitars Tuesday and I believe they had two early twenties Weissenborns.
Call them their good people.

Can you use 13-56 medium gauge strings on a pre-1927 Weissenborn?

I use EJ24s (D'Darrios DADGAD set which has lighter gauge 3rd, 4th and 5th strings) and change 1st & 2nd to 15 & 18. The overall tension in D is 153lb according to D'Darrios String tension pro page. This really useful for working out string tension/different tunings etc. I would think that EJ24's with 14 on the top would be fine.
