Strings... what are you using?

From Zissou Intern on 4/6/2011 3:50:05 PM

What are you using on your weiss? I am thinking specifically D tuning, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on strings for other tunings as well.

For me I started off with John Pearse 3160's, then I got some Newtone Aloha's and thought it couldn't get any better. Well I still had a set of JP's and I figured I would use them up. Sooooooo I put them on and came to the conclusion that I liked the heavier strings better. Especially on the bass. So there ya have it. The anal retentive, strikes again. The reason I even went with the Aloha's because i was concerned about string tension.

I had been using D'Addario EJ-17 phosphor bronze, but then I got a couple of sets of Newtone Aloha's from Grizz, and I really like them. The only problem is that they're really hard to find here in the States, and they're not cheap.

They are great strings no doubt but like you said finding them and then the cost. I don't know if I did the right thing or not. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

juststrings.com has the newtones for around $13.

Anyone try the GHS 1600 Nickel Rollerwound (16-56) on their weiss?

Pearse 3120's here, on the Gold Tone.
I buy singles and make up sets for the C6 instrument, a very inexpensive Ohana.
I've spent more to make it playable than the danged box is worth... It's made me crave a seven string.

I have enough trouble with 6. But listening to Gary play that 8 string Reso was incredible. Now a double neck hmmmmmmm I don't know. Interesting possibilities.

I like the way you think, Grizz... There's a luthier who makes a twin neck Weissenborn. Don't recall his name, at the moment.
OT:
I'd like to personally apologize to all for my poor typing and spelling yesterday. Don't feel singled out- it was an internet-wide phenomenon.

Paddy Burgin makes a double neck. I don't know of any others. Check it out. youtube.com/watch?v=UYKliPVJU1A There are several of him playing it on YouTube. just type in Paddy Burgan or double neck weissenborn. He make and outstanding instrument by all accounts.

Thanks ZI I forgot about Neil. He is another really nice guy that builds a fine, affordable Wessie.

Yes, it was the Celtic Cross site I'd seen before. Nifty!
