Thanks for the welcome, Mike. My story is probably not so unusual. Picked up a Gold Tone Weissenborn SM at my local music store and knew I'd buy it after the first strum. At this point I'd say the "SM" stands for "Serious Mayhem" or - for anyone nearby - S and M, but I remain hopeful.

Welcome Liz! A few years ago I bought my first Weissenborn-style guitar from a friend who had decided to sell it because it seemed to me that it would be a shame for it to leave town. It became a whole new musical thing for me (I'm a longtime pedal steel and six-string player), and next month I am playing my Benoit "Cajunborne" at the Canadian Steel Guitar Show, leaving my pedal steel at home. Amazing instruments.

I've got a checkered musical past: I'm a lefty who plays right-handed, was a classical guitar major in college, got a hand injury when I entered the workforce (focal dystonia, left hand), switched to frame drums for a decade+, then picked up a uke in Maui, then a couple guitars, then this Gold Tone Weiss, then a fender S8 stringmaster. I sound wretched on all of them! For now, anyway. Am selling the guitars to pay for this new, ah, interest. My left hand can't fret accurately, but seems to be doing pretty well with a bar.
What is it with these Weissenborns? There is nothing quite like them.

Oh boy have I got an answer for you. Take a gander at this link. Ed nailed it in my opinion. Listen closely at 3.35 to 3:45. Ed playing "Homage" is THE reason I had to learn to play the Wessie. That's not the song. Maybe I should have stated it better. If you haven't heard "Homage" send me a pm with your e-mail address and I will send you the video I have which is no longer on YouTube. Ed is a nice but funny guy about his videos. He also is adamant about not being video taped by attendees where he is playing. Weird, but then again most artists are. lol

There are several of him playing "Homage" on YouTube, I just personally think the one that has been taken off was the best "live" recording except for his album. He was on the Dennis Miller show and it is awesome.

Hi Liz. You might want to check out Ivan Rosenberg's Ashes and Coals CD. His playing influenced me to pick up the Weissenborn. Then check out Rob Anderlik's site. He is sooooo smooooooothhhh. Oh, and don't forget about the Norwegian slider, Steiner Gregersten's website. He makes beautiful noise on his Lazy River hollowneck. Weissenborns just make me smile!

Liz, I still play and love pedal steel. But Weissenborns are special - when I picked one up I was amazed how easy it was to sing and play (always a struggle on pedal steel). And I just love all the melodic stuff I can do on these instruments - I am excited about the opportunity to share what I have been working on at the show next month. I don't have any Youtube links at present - I will see what I can do about that, since I do have a bit of video kicking around from a couple of performances.

ZI hit it. Ivan, Rob (who I hopefully will be taking a lesson with in the next couple weeks) and Steinar. I good friend of mine that helped me tremendously early on. The list is seemingly endless. We have some members here that are certainly no slouches either. I am NOT in that group. Nob Sugino is another one. I could run out of ink writing them all down. hehehe Someday I should make a list.
