I keep reading about these strings for Weissenborns and they are always described like some kind of holy grail. Tried to order 10 sets from somewhere in England, I think, but never heard back.

They're expensive ($13.04 a set), but they definitely do sound good, and they last quite a while.

Liz, I have no idea why I didn't get a notification of this thread but here goes. "Just Strings" lists them but never has them. Last summer I contacted Malcom, the owner of Newtone. I bought 50 sets because I knew a lot of people looking for them. So I kept some and I sold some. It took me almost 5 months to get them. Even the places that list them in Europe never have them. They are always on back order. I figured I myself would never see them. Malcom told me that he had lost his supplier of wire and was searching for a new one. Well finally they did come. These are hand made. I liked them a LOT, but the only down side was when I tuned down the 6 string lost it's good bass tone. I have since gone back to the John Pearse 3160's and I have no problem with tuning down with these. If you stay in D the Newtones are the best sounding strings I have used. Disclaimer: this is my conclusion and mine alone.

Thanks, Mike. Newtone and Just Strings must have gotten things together, because 2 sets of Aloha strings came pretty quickly. Thanks to you, I know to reserve them for my beater-blues Weiss (made with utter abandon by Steve Wishnevsky) which I keep in D. I'm very happy to have your endorsement of the JP 3160s too. Thank you.

Hi Liz. I'm happy to hear you got the strings so quickly. I hope you like them. I agree with Mike about them being the best sounding strings when tuned in D.
You made me laugh about your Wishnevsky Weiss being "made with utter abandon". The build quality and finish on his instruments looks pretty horrendous, but I've heard they usually sound pretty good.

It will be fun to give them a try on the Wishnevsky - perhaps tonight after work. As for the "Wishenborn." I had to rub out the finish with 0000 steel wool so I wouldn't stick to it. It looked and smelled like he'd used polyurethane well past it's sell-by date. The the body is asymmetrical, headstock looks like it was carved by angry beavers and the mahogany looks like it's been through a fire. The most alarming thing is the saddle: it's a big triangular piece of freestanding corian. You have to hold it upright and position it carefully when you restring. But, the tuners are good, and it delivers a tone that screams the blues to me. Oh - and the double pukas (2 little soundholes on either side of the upper bout) make it possible for him to extend the fretboard all the way up to the 23rd fret, which I like a lot.

Good question. It's louder than in this video, except for the 6th string which is a bit quiet and tubby. It makes you want to play just like this though - even me, who is a noob and can't quite pull it off:

Steve is one of a kind, that's for sure. And, yes, my *custom* Wishenborn, ahem. Made to my specs ("Steve, of the two guitars available I prefer the one with accurate fret markers.").
