Where to buy Newtone Aloha Strings?

From Liz Williams on 5/30/2011 3:52:36 PM

I keep reading about these strings for Weissenborns and they are always described like some kind of holy grail.  Tried to order 10 sets from somewhere in England, I think, but never heard back.

Has anyone tried them?  What did you think?  And, where can they be obtained?

Thanks, and Happy Memorial Day everybody.

Thanks, Chris. Another forum member suggested Just Strings, so I snagged a couple sets from them.

Well then, how do they sound?

I haven't gotten them yet! When I do, I promise to report back.

Okay!!! Then I can buy a set and put them on my "imaginary" Weissenborn copy! :)

Chris, have you decided on what kind of wood you're going to use on your Weissenborn copy? If so, where are you getting from?
Thanks.

Yes, I think I've settled on Koa. Haven't found any yet...........but then I'm waiting on two different suppliers to send pictures as soon as they have stock available. But I'm getting excited about the build. I received my plans in the mail this weeks and they've really got me pumped.

Did you buy the plans from Stew-Mac? I recently bought a set from them. I noticed that they're based on the pre-1927 model Weissenborn, which didn't have the larger "christmas tree" bridgeplate, which they started to put on in 1927. The larger bridgeplate kept the top from pulling up without negatively affecting the sound. You can see it in pictures of Rob Anderlik's Style 1 being built by Tony Francis: bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewto...77e8954b0
Tony arguably builds the most accurate Weissenborn reproductions these days.

Which your imaginary friend can then play. Chris, do we need an intervention here?

OK, fun aside: This is some of the best part, all the anticipating. Can't wait to see pictures and hear about your progress on this guitar.

Liz, I apologize for thread hi-jack.........but it looks as it that's what has happened.

Gitman, I'm aware Tony Francis is reputed to build the most accurate Weissenborn copy..............that's exactly why I asked him to draw me a set of his personal plans! ;-)

No apologies needed, Chris. We were through with the string thing, I think, and your build is a great topic.

My "build" or build project? ;-)

ROFLOL - build PROJECT.

Chris, Wow, how much did the plans from Tony cost? I'd love to get a set also. However, not sure Tony wants to get into that line of business.
Thanks.

Andy, I suggest you send him an e-mail. Don't know if he wants me to "broadcast" the charge.

I put the Aloha strings on my Gold Tone SM and last night and...I'm underwhelmed. They are just OK, IMO. It's a pretty quiet set of string over all, and the 6th string virtually disappears it's so quiet.

Mike, didn't you mention a set of D'Addarios or Pearse's that you liked for your Weissenborn? Would you please remind me which set that was? Thanks everyone for your hep with this.

Chris, found any koa yet?

Just posted a question on strings for the Wessie on the general forums, and Mike recommended the Aloha strings. Now I read that Liz is not too impressed with them. Hmmm. Back to the drawing board I guess.
