Breedlove guitars ship with one of these installed. A friend of mine has installed 2 of these in various guitars and swears by them. I'm thinking of putting one in my Gold Tone SM.

Thought about it, as my Gold Tone LM bellys around the bridge a bit. A nearby dealer has some instruments with the system installed, so at some point I'll check them out.
Be interested if anyone has experience with them; usage, installation, what have you.

Hi Liz. I installed one several years ago in an old laminate top Yamaha 12 string that had a severely bowed top. It wasn't that difficult to install (easier than refinishing a Gold Tone SM... lol) and it worked great. It pulled the top flat, and has remained that way, even with it being tuned to concert pitch.. Go for it..

You got me, Andy - I think of the JLD as a refinishing alternative. After all I've read about the Gold Tone's bellying, I think I will install one. I'll let you all know how it goes. Weezy - go for it!

I'm a little late to this thread, I've also noticed a little bit of bellying on my Gold Tone SM, nothing major yet, but I may be getting a tiny crack at the center seam of the top right behind the bridge. I bought it used so I doubt the warrany covers it....think I might check into the JLD also. If anyone puts one into their weiss it'd be nice to know the results.

I'm going to the Healdsburg Guitar Festival today and tomorrow. A friend of mine has installed several of these in his guitars. I'll ask him to put one in my SM. Can't hurt and might help. I'll let you all know.

UPDATE - I just got off the phone with Don Kendall, inventor of the JLD bridge system, aka, The Bridge Doctor. He's sending me a Weissenborn version of his device which I'll be installing on my abused Gold Tone when it arrives. Says he's installed one on a Gold Tone, but can't remember whether it needs to be shaved down. A friend of mine has used several of these on old guitars with bellied tops and says the work as advertised. I'll let you know how it goes.

Update #2: The Bridge Doctor Don sent me was just the standard one. I have to modify the snot out of it, cutting it down to 2 inches, notching it so the bridge pins would clear the device, removing the plastic sleeve, gluing a dowel (3/8", I think)into the hole that left, and drilling a hole for a wood screw (1-1/4, 6X32). That's what it took to attach the BD to the bridge. After I did all that, the rod that you insert and that makes the whole thing work came right out the hole for the end pin! So, I cut a 7/8" piece of the dowel that came with it and glued it into the end pin hole. Then I tightened the set screw until the dowel stopped wobbling and - wow! What a difference in overall volume and in bass response. It's still a limited guitar in tone ad volume, but much better than it was. And, best of all, the top is not bellying at all, even with a set of Dunlop Reso strings on it. These strings exceed the recommended total tension for this guitar. (188 lbs, I think).
I'll post another update when the bridge doctor has had a chance to settle in. For now, the verdict is: Major PITA, but worth it.
