Tuning

From KEKruske on 2/6/2012 5:33:49 PM

Was just wondering if many of you Wessie players use the low two strings tuned down to D and G, then the other strings (working upward) are D,G,B,D. I've been using that lately and really like the deep bassy sound, although I think I'm getting more rattle from the low strings.

The" Open G" tuning you mentioned is what I use regularly , not only on the Wessie, but also on my dobro. I like the lower range, and eliminating the usual 5th string, B, allows for an "implied:" minor sound by just using the root and fifth scale tones, and not having to avoid hitting the third scale tone found on the 5th string in standard dobro G tuning. Aside from this tuning, Open D and Dsus4 are ones I primaraliy use on the Wessie.

I also use the "low G" Tuning. I also use the high C6 tuning, E,G, A,C,E,G, purloined from the Cindy Cashdollar website. Not crazy about open E, D, or the more modal tunings, but not averse to using them if needed.

I love open D (D-A-D-F#-A D) My Wessie and the 4 Oahus and the Bronson are tuned to it. One Oahu is in C# minor right now for a Mike DeVelta song. And i am going to be changing another to the variation of C that Steve Dawson uses. I do keep the Harlow in open G. Look at Troy's new post on open D. There are a lot of us out there. It is without a doubt the most widely used Weissenborn tuning.
