My new Bear Creek MK Custom is here: LOVE!

From Liz Williams on 2/6/2012 9:02:06 PM

I just got home from L.A. with this.  There are 2 pictures on my home page, here:

http://www.resohangout.com/myhangout/photos2.asp?id=24937&photoID=22462&albumid=1330

I LOVE this guitar.  The photos don't come close to conveying how gorgeous this is - there is figure in the body and the fingerboard wood and it's so dimensional it seems like you're falling into the wood when you look at it.

(For those who want to know, "custom" means I upgraded to rope binding and modernized style 4 position markers.  The bridge is honduran rosewood. the body and fretboard wood are from a huge old-growth koa log that grew on the big island then fell over and is now living again in many weissenborn copies.)

How does it sound, you ask?  Lovely.  It's new still, so its voice is still coming in.  It's got richness and interesting overtones and a bigger sound than seems possible.  Not punch-you-in-the-face loud like a dobro, but full and rich and big.    I play it for awhile, then put it down to give my hands a rest, then sit near it and stare at it until I have to pick it up again.  At this rate, I am not going to get much sleep tonight.

Hi Liz,
That's a beauty!! I really like the Style 4 position markers and rope binding. Very classy looking.. Are you planning to put a pickup in it? If so, what kind? Good luck with your new baby. I'm envious..

Congrats Liz I know you were really waiting for this day and I'm soooooo Happy for you.As you may have seen I've decided to sell my Breedlove/Myrtle.It was a hard decision but I Still have a Cole Clark Violap and the money would come in handy for some medical bills that hit recently.Post a tune when you can.Cal

Thanks, everybody. Am loving it. Was going for "darkly handsome," and I think we achieved that.

I'm not planning on a pick-up for now, Andy, although that could change. Is that a Baggs I see in yours?

Thanks, Calvin. I saw that you'd listed your Breedlove. :-( Hope everything works out on the medical bill front and that the Breedlove sells quickly. It's such a beauty.

Hi Liz. Yes, it's the M1 passive. I love the sound of it in mine. I think Grizz has one in his too..

Beautiful guitar, Liz. I'm curious as to the recommended string gauges by the builder.

I'm waiting for Bill to send those to me, Jack. I'll post them here when I get them. I know the 6th string is a .59, but I didn't retain the rest. He said to watch out for Pearse strings as they have thicker cores than D'Addarios, which is the brand he recommends. Told me I'd have to put together a set from singles.

I'll assume you're going to use the Open D tuning with the .059 6th string? I use a .059 on my 6th string on my dobro ( I switch back and forth between Open D and Open G, (DGDGBD) ) On my import Wessie, I won't go any higher than .056 on the 6th string.

Yes, open D and open (low) G. I put a bridge doctor on my import (Gold Tone) Weissie, and am going to put a .59 on it this weekend.

I can see where a person could get to having a pile of .59 gauge strings just sitting around.
