All,
I have never had much luck playing electrified instruments. It always seemed like a lot of hassle and I never knew what buttons to push/settings to use. Since I now primarily play for myself, it didn't make a lot of sense and so I haven't owned a electrified instrument in 15 years.
I however, have got the itch to play with looping. I think one could do some pretty incredible stuff with a looped weissie, not to mention looping in other instruments like a banjo or a bass. It also could be used as a learning tool. I would also like to have it to record thoughts/phrases that I come up with and can then transfer them to my computer for future reference.
With that said, I need to know what items I would need to do this. So far, I think I would need the following:
1. Pickup (soundhole pickup preferably, something that I can use in the weissie or dreadnought guitar).
I am looking for any recommendations, so far I have read a little about the Sunrise pickup and the Baggs.
2. Looping pedal (would like it to have decent memory, and the ability to transfer files to a computer with USB or something similar). I don't need anything super complicated.
Any recommendations?
3. Amp
I have seen Grizz speak praise for the Micro Cube, however, I would like it to have the ability to use both battery and AC power. Looks like it only does battery.
Any recommendations?

OK one by one. I have the Baggs M-1 passive in my Bear Creek (not shown in the photo as this was from the seller and I never updated it) and I also have it in my Nick Lucas Oahu model 71K. I went passive because of Ed Gerhards recommendation. youtube.com/watch?v=oqQGQrc-uUw and who on earth has a better sound? IMO NO ONE. However he recommends Fishmans because he is a paid endorser. For a listen at looping ,Jerry Douglas does a cover of Duane Allman's "Little Martha" Playing thru once and looping it then playing the harmony along with the loop.Sounds very awesome.You may find a live version on you tube,I haven't looked , but I've seen him play it live several times. and the studio version is on his "Look out for Hope" album.

Thanks, I just ordered a pickup and amp. On the fence about whether I need a pre-amp. Next step is to spend some time figuring what the best looping rig would be for me.

Did you get an active or passive pick up? What kind? If it is passive you will definitely need one. I got a good deal on a Baggs Venue DI on e-bay and it is outstanding. youtube.com/watch?v=9LEQJZ9JMs...lpp_video Don't even pay attention to the "street price" I got mine brand new off flea-bay a lot cheaper.

well it was a toss-up between the Baggs m1 passive, Fishman Neo-D, Sunrise, and or the Seymour Duncan mag mic. The first three are passive I believe, and the later seems to be active and the latest greatest that some of the big names of weissenborn are using. In the end, the price won out and I went with the Fishman Neo-D, I will probably look into the Mag Mic in the future.
I took a look at the baggs venue and was scared off with the price. I didn't think about hitting up flea-bay, but will start watching it.
What will happen if I plug the Fishman neo-d directly into the micro-cube? No sound? Or is it that I will have the lack of tone/volume control that a pre-amp would give me? I am a complete newb when it comes to these electric gizmos...hard to believe since I am a programmer by trade.

I like you learned as I went. Ed Gerhard, the one responsible for me getting and playing the Wessie suggested in his Breedlove workshop the Neo-D but remember he is a Fishman endorser. Check this out youtube.com/watch?v=oqQGQrc-uUw Now I had a friend at the time that was a pro for many, many years and knew all about this that mentored me. He told me that with the passive pickup I would need a pre-amp and suggested the Baggs Venue DI. I don't remember ever plugging in without it as I had it before my Wessie arrived from Elderly's. I had the seller ship it direct to them for the pup install. So again I never tried it. I Would guess you would get some sound but you need to be able to voice it and that is something I don't think you can do with just your amp. Next time I have my Wessie or Oahu out I will try it. Now on to the Venue DI here is one brand new on flea-bay ebay.com/itm/LR-Baggs-Venue-DI...3791e9dd0 This is who I got mine from, I offered $225 and they took it. (a little insider trading secret) how I know what someone will take on best offer if they have several is look at their feedback and see what they have previously accepted.

I have been doing some looking at the pre-amps and have a bid or two out on flea-bay. I also ordered a Seymour Duncan Mag Mic 6, to compare with the Neo-D, so depending a pre-amp may not be as neccessary.
Has anyone here ever tried their weissie with the Fishman Aura Spectrum or any of the Aura offerings? I see they have a Jerry Douglas version, but it looks like it is more for an actual resonator and not a hollowneck.

The JD version of the aura is for Resonator not Wessie. BTW I found this "The Neo-D can be used directly with most amps and PA systems without a preamp, and does not need batteries" I don't know how accurate this is.

Yeah I had read that about the Neo-D, I also read the Roland Micro-Cube could be used as a preamp. Lots of confusing info out there. Figure the best thing would be to try it first hand.

Looks like you can actually use the Neo-D without a pre-amp (at least feeding it into the Roland Micro-Cube). However, it doesn't sound as good as the Seymour Duncan Mag mic as far as tone/clarity/volume. However, with a pre-amp it probably could hold its own against the SD. Right now I am debating which one to return. Don't have a pre-amp yet, so I am torn a bit.

I will say this. Lee and i were discussing my signal chain and he asked my why I was plugging my lap steels into the Venue DI and not direct into the amp. I told him that was just the way I had it set up. So anyway I plugged directly into the amp next time. Took me all of 30 seconds to run it back through the Baggs. There was that much difference in sound and volume. Remember there is a 5 band EQ on the DI as well. As far as the Roland if you already haven't purchased I would suggest you go with the Micro Cube RX over the Micro Cube. A lot more bang for your buck. I got a hell of a deal on mine off flea bay, it was a store display only, not for use. It kicks a$$.
