New Member: Welcome to the group, Dan!

A big welcome to Dan Schwartz, our newest member.  It's great to have you, Dan.  So we can get to know you a bit, please tell us something about yourself, like how you came to play the Weissenborn and whatever else you'd like us to know.

When you get a minute, I'd love to hear about that stand pictured in your avatar.  Looks sturdy.

Thanks for the welcome Liz,

I got the Weissenborn bug when a friend loaned me his Kona several years ago. I had it for several months and fell in love with it. Shortly after I returned the Kona another friend and luthier, Troy Marcio, built me my 7-string hollowneck that is in the picture. I now am performing regularly on it with my group The Neighborhood Trio which consists of vibraphone, double bass and me on the 7-string Weissenborn. Please feel free to check out the audio and video on our site theneighborhoodtrio.com.

I love that stand! It was built by Mark Roeder of Deluxe 34 Lap Steel Stands.

What a great sound, Dan. I love the way the vibes, bass and Weissenborn sound together - they seem inevitable.. And the sound of that 7-string - your tone is sublime. Adding a string and the 6th degree of the scale opens up so much musical territory. Greg Booth does this on his dobro in G, tuning his 6th string to E. Do you know it? youtube.com/watch?v=okrwoFDM98E

Now the barrage of questions: Where is the 6th exactly? What electronics are you using? Such a clean warm sound. Thanks for posting the link to your band.

Hi Liz,

Thank You for the kind words about the trio and for sharing the link to Greg Booth. I have seen his videos before, but not this one - it is beautiful! The original tuning of my 7 string was very similar to what Greg is using. It had the 6th degree on the bottom. So I had open D with a big low B on the bottom. I loved it for solo arrangements, but when I started to explore the C6 tunings I loved having the 6th in the middle of the tuning and the whole step that it produced. So the 2 main tunings I use with the trio are DADF#ABD and a dominant 7th tuning - DCDF#ABD. My friend Troy Marcio is wanting to build me an 8 String that combines these tunings so there is no need to retune at shows - DACDF#ABD.

As for electronics, I have a Fishman Matrix under the saddle that runs to a Radial Tonebone PZ-Pre preamp into an AER Domino amp. I do love this combo - super clean.

Thanks again,
Dan

This is fantastic, Dan. Lots of food for thought in those tunings. I can see the appeal of an 8-string too. Mike Auldridge made good use of all 8-strings on "8-String Swing," one of my favorite dobro CDs.

I'm fascinated that you get such a clean, warm sound from an under-saddle pick-up. Wow. I'll have to check out your other gear - I don't know the amp at all.

I'm glad you've joined the group. I'm really looking forward to hearing more from you as your musical journey unfolds. Love that you're pushing the boundaries of the Weissenborn.
