That Hilo is just down the 5 freeway an hour and some change. Drat. I thought I was done acquiring instruments for awhile, but I just changed strings on my cheapie experimental "mule" and was wishing for a nicer instrument to use in C6.

Don't be fooled! The Style 625 Hilo is not koa--it is Spanish cedar. Spanish cedar is a misnomer and so called because it was popular as a wood for Cuban cigar boxes. It is actually a low grade of mahogany. The only all-koa Hilo is the Style 670. The Style 625 is the bottom of the Hilo line produced by Oscar Schmidt. The price is about right for a 625, though.

I'm becoming fascinated - ok, obsessed - with all the little details that go into making that Weissenborn tone. Or tones, I guess. Fretwire, aluminum, brass or bone for the saddle, bone, ebony or ? for the nut. So different from my idea of guitar sound: The sound was Martin for steel string, Ramirez or Contreras for classical. I had fewer guitars then too.

I think that koa wood contributes greatly to the Weissenborn tone. I have discovered this from experiments I have conducted with various tone woods: mahogany is porous and "soaks up' sound, resulting in a warm and muddy tone. Spruce produces a bright tone with reflected overtones. Both are nice, but vibration damps out pretty quickly after a string is plucked. Koa wood produces a tone that is somewhere in between, but I have had vibration continue for 21+ seconds after plucking a string. This is just to my ear and with no electrical pickup involved. The Weissenborn tone is a major interest of mine, so I am interested in what others have to say.

A friend of mine had a GIbson J-200 with a spruce top and koa back and sides. It wasn't all that evident in the room, but when recorded, the instrument showed a beautiful and detailed top end- very airy and bright.

I'm always fascinated at how guitars record differently than they sound in the room.
I'm sitting here with my new (to me) Celtic Cross and had decided it wasn't all that until I moved to a different spot in my living room. It came alive and I could hear how sweet it sounded.

Sometimes when I want to hear how a new guitar sounds, I sit on the edge of the bath tub with the guitar, with my feet inside the tub, and let the sound bounce off the tiled enclosure!
