Teardrop Weissenborn

From Tom_Noe on 9/30/2012 4:21:53 PM

Since nobody else has mentioned it, I guess I will.  Heritage Auctions has a 1930 Weissenborn teardrop up for auction.  Auction closes October 4 at 10 PM Central Time.  Here's the link:     http://entertainment.ha.com/c/search-results.zx?Ne=2158&N=53+793+794+792+2088+2163&ic=althome4-homepage_browse-101711

Only a couple dozen of these are known to exist, and their sound is wonderful!  Here is your chance to own one!

Hello Tom,
Your post prompted me to check your excellent book " Chris J Knutsen " which you co-authored with Daniel L.Most. On page 177 there is a picture of a 1930 Greenfield, which of course is not a teardrop but never the less the extra sound chamber must have added lots of bass I would think. Getting back to your link I see this from the description.....
"""1930s Weissenborn Natural Hawaiian Steel Guitar. Back is separating from sides. Loose and broken braces. Paint on the fingerboard. Nicks dings and scratches to the finish. Worthy of a professional restoration. Project guitar sold as-is. Soft case included. Condition: Poor. Estimate: $700 - up. """
This would just be my cup of tea Tom. I would love to spend the winter with such a project.
Regards.
Jim

Hi Jim,
Open seams and loose braces are generally easy to repair. The paint on the fingerboard is somebody's numbering and should come off easily. From the photos, there doesn't appear any cracks or major damage.

Thank you for your kind remarks about the Knutsen book. I was lucky to get that Greenfield "hambone" model. It was one of several found when the factory was discovered intact 65 years after it was abandoned in 1930. It does have good bass response.

Go, Jim! What a wonderful project. And you'll post pictures, right?

And when you get it playable you can come play in the bath tub with Liz and me!

Tom if the back is already separating from the sides, the opening will let me in. I have three .015" separators which I heat up to melt the hide glue. We could have the back off ready for surgery whilst granny is cookin' the grits. HaHa!!
PS: I hope others are aware of your extra page for your book called "The missing link" which they can download and print.

Regarding the Teardrop auction. Last night it was $80.
This morning at 8:30 am it is $220. That shoots me down,
unless I can find another Gary Fisher bike to swap like I did for my rescued Regal fixer upper square neck.

I bet the price will get even higher. Another one that's going to get away, I guess. You can still come to the bathtub jam though, Jim. ;-)
