Hi Liz,
thank you very much. Very happy to be a member of the group and make it a little more international (I'm from Germany :-)). You are right, my avatar shows my original weissenborn style 2. I fell in love with acoustic hawaiian guitars 2 years ago and I'm glad to own Tom's book, which to me is like a "bible" for these guitars :)

Thanks for bringing us some international flair, Seabass. I love seeing the reach of these obscure, magical instruments. I'm always glad to meet someone else who spends their free moments with Tom's wonderful book and with the guitars he describes therein. What music are you working on these days, if I may ask?

I could look through Tom's book every day, it's awesome :)
I'm currently working on Kelly Joe Phelps' song "Wandering away", which seems pretty easy at first but when you look at the details it is pretty difficult (at least for me as a beginner). Other than that I started to play some songs of Harry Manx. How about you?

I love Kelly Joe's music! There is a lot going on in his playing. I haven't attempted any of his songs, so hats off to you! I'm a beginner too, and am slowly learning Cindy Cashdollar's version of Oh Susannah. Simple song, and great syncopation in the accompaniment. When time is short for practicing, I put on a recording of a familiar, simple song and play along. Bob Blair (one of the group members) swears the Weissenborn is great to sing along with, but so far I can't quite manage that. Harry Manx is another favorite of mine. Are you finding his songs challenging to learn?

Liz, I have been working on 'Oh Susannah' also, are you learning it by ear or did you find some resources to help you accomplish it? So far, I have only one youtube video to go by.

I'm using Transcribe! to slow down the you tube video and learn it note-by-painful-note. It really sticks that way, but it's slow going. How about you - both of you? I wish I was faster at learning this way, or would magically put everything in tab.

Liz, the difficulty of Harry Manx songs in my opinion really depends. I started with "Only then will your house be blessed" which is not too hard I think (also to sing along) . But others are way more difficult and I'm not capable to play them yet ;)

Manx doesn't always use the Mohan Veena - when I saw him live he only used it on a couple of tunes. When I played one of Grant Wickland's resonator veenas (at least one of which is now in Harry's hands) the top strings on which melodies are played were tuned to D and an A, just like the top strings of the D tuning. Below that are a bunch of drone strings (all D's and A's as I recall), and then there are the sympathetic strings running on a diagonal. So to play some basic stuff that sounds familiar to our western ears is not necessarily that hard. The microtonality - now that takes some serious learning! Also, I suspect that the tuning I encountered was jsut one of many possible tunings.

When I checked out "Only then will your house be blessed" on you tube, I realized Harry really does play some pretty simple stuff. Rhythmically fabulous, but not a billion notes. And what a groove he has!
