Basically I am a 5-string banjo player, but I am hooked to steel guitars for 5 or 6 years now. What really brought me there were some Sol Hoopii tracks on one of these Hawaiian samplers. From there I started my steel quest and quickly found my other hero, Joaquin Murphy. All my steel guitars are tuned to some type of C6, the first reason being that it keeps me from trying to play banjo licks on the steel guitar, the other one that I really love it’s sound and versatility. Recently I have been using an 8-string lap steel with my band Dawgmatic, but I feel it sounds a little too electric for that band. Since I did not want to use a single cone reso, I decided to get a Weissenborn for that purpose. After some “research” I ended up ordering a 7-string Brauchli with a floating bridge. Probably won’t get it before June, so there will be a long time looking forward to that. And I’m also looking forward to follow what you guys will be discussing about Weissenborns. I have a pretty limited repertoire on Weissenborn and basically play everything in D tuning so it will be helpful to hear more and learn more from members here who play in different turnings, different styles.
	Karl Rabe says: 11/1/2012 5:49:09 AM @RobA: My choice for C6 is Low-High: CEGAce on 6 strings and bGCEGAce on 8 strings. In this tuning you easily get minor, 6th, doninant 7th and minor 7th chords, with split-slants you get big portions of dim and m7b5 chords, the 8 string version adds major 7 chords. Then the intervals are close enough to cover much melody playing without having to jump around to much. At least with my simple melodies... For the Weissenborn I'd have preferred 8 strings as well, but I am afraid of overloading the top, since I also prefer a rather higher string tension. So there I will have at least the low G to benefit a little better from the bass qualities of a weissenborn, also I expect that to come in handy for backup playing. At least that is what I am thinking... ;-) @seabass: where exactly are you from? Sounds northern to me.
