Hi Everybody - Every year I make a doomed attempt to learn some Christmas music. It's doomed because I always start too late! This year I've been playing through "Dobro Christmas" by Steve Toth. I'd love to play something seasonal on my Weissie, but I'm not finding any tab for Christmas music in open D. Is there anything out there like that?

	Bob Blair says: 11/28/2012 8:27:38 PM I can figure out a tune or two if you want. Not tonight as I am on the road, but soon. I'm not very good at writing tab, but then again maybe it is time I learned to do it. What I am pretty good at is playing whatever I feel like. Most of the traditional tunes lie really easily in the D tuning. Pick out a couple of your favourite traditional carols and I'll see what I can do.

I can get the ones that seem simpler, like Away in a Manger and Silent Night. Don't necessarily need tab - audio or video also works, especially if you play kinda slow. Thanks again, Bob.
	jacknj says: 11/29/2012 6:27:08 AM The same relative notes are common to both G and D tuning, except the notes in D tuning are found one string lower than tabbed in G tuning. In G tuning, the scaler note relationship, starting from the lowest to highest, is root, 3rd, 5th, root, 3rd, 5th. In D tuning, the scaler relationship is root, 5th, root, 3rd, 5th and root. As you can see, the sequence of root, 3rd, 5th is common to both tunings. What you play on the top three stings in G tuning can be found on strings 2,3, and 4 in D tuning. If you play the notes tabbed in G tuning on a D tuned instrument, the melody will be there except in the key of D (assuming the song were done in the key of G). By the way, Steve Toth's books are done well, but it's even better when you can take lessons from him as I did years ago.
	Liz Williams says: 11/29/2012 9:07:47 AM Jack, using the 1-3-5 commonality to translate/transpose tab between the G and D tunings hadn't occurred to me. Thank you! I'll play with this some and report back. Being able to play songs across tunings (and instruments) would be freeing.
	Bob Blair says: 11/29/2012 9:18:30 PM Hi. When I got home tonight I came up with some neat approaches to those tunes. Really fun. I have trouble figuring out how I could communicate what I am doing through tablature though (and certainly not in time for the season which seems to almost be upon us). Maybe I can make a video if I can get the technology going. But another option might be a Skype session - I've never done it but my son does it all the time and I could get him to set me up with it. Liz do you do Skype?
