Hello everyone. I'm so glad I found this. I've been having a hard time finding good tabs and weissenborn specific content. Anyone have a great resource for tabs or a great music book to recommend?

Stephen - The list chunter steered to you is the best we've got and we keep adding to that. Troy's open D lessons gave me a good foundation when I was just starting. His videos are thorough and very soothing. I'd recommend starting there.

not quite sure at what level you are but if you have some basic knowledge already, I'd recommend the DVDs of Bob Brozman (Slide guitar for blues: Lap style) and Kelly Joe Phelps (Slide guitar of Kelly Joe Phelps).

I am going to play a set in the non-pedal room a the Southwest Steel Guitar Association's (swsteelguitar.com) Annual Steel Guitar Show in Phoenix next month. The Show runs from Jan 17th to the 19 - I don't know when my set will be. I am planning to bring my weissenborn (me BEnit Cajunborne) and possibly a resonator guitar as well - eithermy set will be all weissenborn or else weiss and dobro, depending on what I decide as the event gets closer. . The show will be great for anyone interested in any kind of steel guitar - some of the best players from anywhere are lined up to be there. There will not likely be a lot of weissenborn action there, but there will be lots of other stuff that might be of interest.

I will for sure be there. Are they focusing on different styles on Steel guitars each day or is it all just going to be a mix each day.

Steel guitar conventions are kind of unlike anything else I have ever encountered. I have not been to the Phoenix Show before but I gather it follows more or less the same format as the ones in Dallas and St. Louis that I have gone to often. There will be a large ballroom which will have a super-competent house band and feature a parade of well respected players performing half hour or so sets. Many of the best known players in the business from Nashville and LA etc will be part of that. My friend Chuck Lettes from Denver runs a "non-pedal room" which features performances on non-pedal steel guitars by some of the same big names and others (such as me). Various manufacturers of steel guitars and related paraphernalia will have rented space to display their stuff. You will sometimes see/here amazing stuff going on as people try out and demonstrate the stuff. So there is a formal and an informal aspect to these things. Also part of it is about making and reuniting with friends from all over the place. What you have is a hotel full of musicians, mostly steel guitar players, and lots of opportunity to watch and listen to the best players, sometimes at very close quarters. It is not going to be easy, or perhaps even possible, to decide which day is going to be the best. If only one day, probably a Saturday is a good bet. I'm flying in Thursday afternoon and leaving Sunday night. Would be great to get together - maybe I can show you a thing or two on Weissenborn (or maybe by then you will be playing circles around me and can show me a thing or two!).

I forgot to say that the main ballrooom will probably lean heavily toward pedal steel, but not entirely.

i reached out to the website contact for that event. He said it's mainly all pedal steel guitars but he would have an itinerary posted on the site as we got closer to the date. We will definitely have to meet up. If i can only make it one day i'll

The non-pedal sessions are run kind of separately in a smaller room - I see that last year they had eleven players on the bill. I look forward to meeting you.

Here is a link to an announcement by Chuck about the non-pedal sessions in Phoenix. Very humbling to see my own name listed with so many of my heroes!! Bobby Black's work with the Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen is a major part of the reason that I took up pedal steel. And he is but one in a long list of great players - this is an event well worth attending for anyone interested in any form of steel guitar. Just a month away.......
