Hi, I know Liz has some Ouahu (spelling?)guitars, but I've been looking at a Gold Tone PBKG squareneck and wonder how much difference there is with a weissenborn; tunings, soundhole pickup capabilities,etc. Good instrument to learn?, opinions please. I'm laboring the fact that I've got big investment in learn & Master guitar + 4 LH guitars VS learning a RH'd lap steel, of which I am right handed and feel like I'd be a better picker RH'd. Make sense?

I played one of those a bit last month at the Texas Steel Guitar Association jamboree - Howard Parker was representing Beard and had one on display. I liked it and I don't see how you could go wrong. I have an old student model Oahu also, and it is fun but for making music I have to say I would take that Gold Tone.
I don't know anyone who learned to play guitar LH and then learned steel RH, but I would think it would be doable. If you were to get into pedal steel you would find that LH pedal steels are few and far between. I of course know lots of left handed folk who learned to play right-handed.

I just happened to be watching some of the Gold Tone promo videos on their website the other day and took note that the PBKG has a nice voice. It seems to have a brighter tone then their weissenborns and AJ Gent really makes it sing. From the video it is difficult to tell how the low end is, probably will sound more like a regular acoustic and less throaty than the weissie.
It also seems to be made with some great materials and should be a good purchase if that is the tone you are going for. I also believe that they make a left handed model if desired. The PBKG may be able to take the dobro G tuning, but that should be confirmed with Beard or Goldtone. They don't have the dire warnings about using an higher tension tuning like they do with their weissenborn copies.
All in all I think it looks like a great option.

I was tempted to buy the one I played with - very reasonably priced and sounded good. A different voice than a hollow neck weissenborn style, but a very nice sound for not a lot of money. And there are any number of pickups you could stick in it.

The Oahu's I have are fun, but limited in terms of tone, volume and expression. I've thought about selling both of them and getting one of these. I'm glad to hear such positive reviews of them.
I'm left-handed and learned to play right-handed. I've played left-handed too - it took patience, but wasn't as hard as first learning to play. I can't tell from the video (love his playing!), but this guitar should have an uncompensated saddle, making it easy to switch it from RH to LH. When I was deciding which way I was going to play, I had a RH and LH nut to make switching easy. It sounds like this would be a good guitar to experiment with. If you get one, let us know how it goes.

Wow! What a quick responce to a question, thanks! I'm not far into LH guitar studies, just 1st position single note and open chords, just starting to lose my mind on barr chords. I lost interest about the time I was just on the verge of sounding like music, kinda. It feels awkward strumming w/left hand when I'm a natural RH. That's why I'm flirting with the lapsteel thing so I can get back to RH'd picking. You all gave thePBKG a good enough thumbs up for me as far as a quality instrument goes, thanks a bunch for that and when I decide to get one I will let you all know about it. You're a great bunch of people I'm proud to call friends.

Hi Randy - I just read your bio and you're missing at least part of your left index finger. I've got a bum left hand (focal dystonia - disobedient fingers in layman's terms) which is why I took up steel guitar. My left-hand can't fret consistently, and it wasn't much good at fingerpicking either. Playing with a pick was OK, but it just wasn't the sound I wanted. Using my left hand to hold a steel works really well for me. Good luck!

My big concern is putting in time and work on regular guitar, strumming left-handed and being limitted by a short index finger which at best could hold the bottom half of a flat pick; or I could rest it on top of a Lap Dawg with some company (thumb and middle finger). Just don't know which I would like better, a weiss or the PBKG. Yeah left finger tip gone a little past the first knuckle,screwed it up pretty good for guitar playing, funny though, never wanted to play guitar til after my little accident.
