I have one and use it in my weissenborns. I am really happy with it. I keep playing with the amount of Mic mix. I started with the Mic volume way up, but have started to turn it down to the point that most of the pickup is from the Mag with a bit of the Mic mixed in for the extra sparkle.
The beauty of this unit is that you have one pickup that has the Mag and Mic together and you can mix them from the same unit without any other equipment required.
It is an active pickup that will require a 9 volt battery. If I remember right the Mic is positioned under the treble strings, it still picks up the bass, but is primarily there for the top three strings.
I have done a few sample recordings with the following chain: SD Mag/Mic-->Looping Pedal-->Amp. I haven’t gotten around getting a pre-amp yet, but so far most the recordings sound pretty good to my ear without it. I previously posted this sound cloud sample. You will find people who swear by either. Also don't rule out the defacto weissenborn standard, the Sunrise pickup.
I would think that your pickup options would be dependent upon the application. I am sure that gigging may have slightly different amplification requirements than studio recording.
I am a hack, that only bought a pickup so I could use my looping pedal to practice and to record phrases and thoughts. I don't gig out, or do any studio work. I only play primarily to relieve stress. So the Mag Mic works for me. I am sure the LR baggs or the sunrise would have been great also for my purposes.
