I like the instrument and making the transition from Dobro tuning to DADF#AD is a little challenging, but I'll get there eventually, the Lord willing. Any tips? I liked the sound of the Weissenborn so I decided to try my hand at it. I'm looking forward to reading your posts and learning from you. David
	Liz Williams says: 6/16/2013 11:29:02 AM Hi David - the Gold Tone SM was my first Weissenborn too. I'm still learning open D. I'm finding three things helpful: 1. Picking-out melodies/licks I know, then forcing myself to name the notes. Doing the same with scales. 2. Finding interesting ways to move between chords. i play 2 or 3 over and over and look for different ways to connect them. Troy Brennningmeyer's video lessons are very helpful for this. He has several for D tuning. I'm using his Chords lesson a lot. 3. Learning arrangements of songs. Troy B. and Rob Anderlik each have some on their sites.

RickW says: 6/16/2013 7:38:12 PM The most important things, in my opinion, are to remember that [1] anything you know in G you can do in D, just one string closer to your face, [2] approach the weissenborn the way you would a lap steel, without the fuzztone and overdrive--that is, mindful of overtones, intonation, and where on the neck to voice a particular tone. Less is indeed more, and restraint is rewarded . If you want the single best lesson resource there is [again in my own opinion only], find a recording of David Lindley's record with El Rayo-X, entitled "Win This Record". The last cut is "Look So Good". It is like a Zen kata--you could spend the rest of your life trying to understand and play this song. One and a half minutes of perfection. The spaces between notes are if anything more important than the notes themselves, and this is probably Lindley's best example of how to move into and out of a note with the bar. I think it is also important to understand that the placement of your right hand relative to the bridge is probably more important with the weissenborn than with the dobro; that is to say that the weissenborn, much like any acoustic guitar, is very responsive to where you pick in relation to the bridge and sound hole. All of the foregoing is my own opinion. Your mileage will vary. License, title, taxes and dealer prep are extra.
