Frets

From Steve-o on 7/3/2013 5:22:21 PM

Hi Everyone

Does anyone know the thickness of the wood inserts  used when installing wood markers instead of metal frets.

Thx

Steve

I think it varies. A friend uses feeler gauges that he got in an auto supply store to figure this out. If memory serves, they are what mechanics use to gap spark plugs. HTH.

I used maple inserts in a walnut finger board of a lap steel I made. The slots were 1/16th inch, defined by the size of the Dremel bit I used. They were ripped on a table saw and sanded by hand to fit. It was a bit labor intensive but it worked and looks very nice.

Thanks, I was wondering if I could get a preslotted fretboard from LMII but those slots would be too narrow.

Steve-o, there is a store near me - MacBeath Lumber in Berkeley, CA - that sells hardwood. When I was looking into making my shortscale bass fretless, I was talking to them about using hardwood veneer in the slots. You could call LMII - they are very helpful.
