Thanks for the comments. Now all that's left for me to do is some woodshedding. Any suggestions on what fingerpicks to use? I've never used any befor and currently I'm using those Dunlop metal things but they hurt after about 10 minutes. Is metal the way to go? I use a Blue Chip Reso Thumbpick, would plastic be a better match?

There is nothing written in stone that you have to use picks. I think the weissenborn works very well without them. Unlike a dobro.
There is a nice style fingerpick by ProPik called a fingertone that works well. Let's the flesh of your finger make subtle contact and also makes it easy to mute the strings when needed. Just a thought.

I used to have the same problem with fingerpicks. I switched to Perfect Touch fingerpicks a few years ago and those problems went away. Basically the PT fingerpicks fit snug but they don't dig into your cuticles the way that standard fingerpicks do so you can wear them for a long time without them hurting your fingers. I use the round faced version...

Thanks, Dutch, I was looking at those fingertones but the website says they're only good for regular guitar??? I have always played fingerstyle with only a thumbpick and even on the Dobro I never use fingerpicks....until now. It just sounds better to me and the Weiss really benefits from them as well. My nails sound best but they break constantly.

Most of the time I play without fingerpicks but sometimes I use "Alaska" picks. To me they feel really comfortable and they are available in different sizes. You should try them.

I use brass Acri fingerpicks for reso and weissenborn, along with the Blue Chip thumb pick. Like the Perfect Touch picks they fit snugly without digging in. I like a heavy pick and they certainly fit the bill that way. For some reason though they have never felt right for pedal steel, so for that I use old Nationals (also quite heavy), several pairs of which I have had forever, and various kinds of plastic thumb picks. In terms of plastic thumb picks I really like Golden Gates. You can get GG's and Acris from Elderly.
