It was recently brought to my attention by someone who visited his booth at the Edmonton Folk Festival that this builder of weissenborn-style instrumentsis just up the road from me. So today I paid a visit to Tom at Twisted Wood Guitars. Not only did I have a great visit, but I was impressed by all the instruments I saw and played. From entry level laminates (which by the way sound great) to solid top to solid wood, every guitar gets high marks in terms of fit and finish. The prices are so reasonable that when I looked at the website I thought it was too good to be true. I am not currently in the market for another high-end instrument, but I could not resist a beautiful looking laminate teardrop, which I will likely take to my office but which I would not hesitate to play anywhere for anyone - it has a real voice, looks beautiful and is a joy to play. Too cool!

	Liz Williams says: 8/18/2013 8:50:41 PM Great-looking website. Are you going to post some audio of your new teardrop? I'd love to hear it. I've always wondered what teardrops sound like compared to hollownecks.
	Bob Blair says: 8/18/2013 9:42:43 PM One of these days I'll get my zoom recorder going again and post some stuff on sound cloud. It sounds pretty - I've only played a couple of teardrops and really don't have a good sense of the way they can be expected to sound. I can say that I like the sound almost as much as his solid wood teardrop, but I think you get more dynamic range out of the solid wood. You don't get a big growl on the low end like I can get on my koa instrument, but the high end has lots of dynamic range and sounds sweet. The tuners, whatever they are, work really well. It is so much better in every way than the Chinese-made instruments I have encountered (including a solid wood one that I unfortunately own and seem to be unable to get rid of - like the cat that comes back) that it is not in the same league. The fit and finish on this one, all done by Tom himself, is near flawless, and that was the case with all the instruments of his that I looked at. I am generally a bit of an instrument snob, I suppose, but I think I will have a lot of fun with this, and I wouldn't hesitate to perform with it.
	jonbass says: 8/20/2013 5:13:27 PM My Solid top Twisted Wood Balance Series just arrived in the mail today. I haven't had much of a chance to spend time with it but my first impression is great. It sounds very unique as I'm not familiar with weissenborns. The finish is good. i was looking for something fairly inexpensive that I could use at school and drag around with me. This exceeded my expectations. I will do a detailed writeup once i get some time to sit down with it. Bob, you must be in Edmonton! I'm originally from St .Albert.
