H, gang-

I'm interested in people's knowledge and opinions about scale length and the slide guitar. I've been switching between my weissenborn style instruments and an electric lap steel, and can't quite get used to the shorter electric.

Any thoughts, tips, tricks? Time and practice will likely cure the issue, but I may run out of patience, and go back to the Weissenborn "solamente".

	Liz Williams says: 9/10/2013 12:09:13 AM Switching between electric and acoustic is more than just a scale change, those are different instruments with different technique. Do you think you might be expecting too much too quickly? When I first started studying recorder, my teacher had me switch between soprano (in C), alto and bass recorders (in F), as well as switching from reading music in treble, alto, tenor and bass clefs. She was teaching me to switch and orient quickly as much as she was teaching me to play any one recorder. I was confused and frustrated for the first several months, because I didn't feel competent on any of the instruments. When I got to the point where I could switch seamlessly, it was like a miracle to me! Maybe switching back and forth between the electric and acoustic a lot more would have the same effect?
	Bob Blair says: 9/10/2013 6:14:06 AM It does get to the point where playing different scale lengths doesn't seem to be an issue. One cool thing about the shorter scale length is how much easier it is to play some of the slants. I think for me the key is making sure I'm hearing well. Try practicing the new instrument in the early morning when you are not tired - for a lot of people that makes a huge difference to how quickly I get used to playing something.
