I received my Brauchli weissenborn today. Of course it looks beautiful. It is a 2009 and the person I bought it from was the original, and only, owner. I pulled it out of the box and put on the fingerpicks and was underwhelmed. It sounded dead. I asked the original owner how old the strings where and he told me he had never changed the strings! they were the strings that came on the guitar originally back in 2009 and that he had never played the guitar!.
So, I pulled through my single strings looking for gauges that would work. I got close enough and started to string this thing: not an easy task. The strings are so tight at the headstock that it was a real chore to change all the strings. And still I wasn't sure I liked the sound.
Knowing that it had never been played, I figured it needed to open up some and I also swapped out the dobro bar I was using for a round tip lap steel bar. Finally I plugged it into my AER and the BANGO. What a sound! This is an instrument that gains much with a good acoustic amp. I'm having a blast and either the bar change and/or the string change has worked wonders on the straight non amplified acoustic sound as well.
so recap: opening up as an acoustic, a monster plugged in, a tuning headstock that is going to take some getting used to.
