Decisions, decisions

From Oldpiper73 on 11/16/2013 12:00:28 PM

Well, it appears that my banjo has been sold, so now I have to decide between a used Deneve dobro and an Anderwood weissie. I somewhat prefer the weissie sound, but there are a lot more instruction materials and tunes for the dobro. I'm definitely not an ear player and need all the tab and CD/DVD help I can get. What's the best for the Weissenborn?

I couldn't decide which to buy, so I got both. Bought the Deneve reso and an inexpensive Weissenborn made by a gentleman in NC. We'll see how it works out.

You know, this is such a good way to resolve these either-or dilemmas. Congratulations indeed.

Now I have a question about my "inexpensive" Weissenborn. First, it was made by Andrew Instrument Co. in TN which looks like it is no longer in business. The guitar is well made and has a decent sound, but the volume, especially on the bass is pretty low. A couple of years ago there was a thread about replacing the saddle with stainless steel (3/8" I believe Liz said). I can't tell whether the saddle is bone or plastic, but it is .4" high. If I replaced it with the SS, what can I expect in the sound? The sting angle is currently pretty drastic, but I have no idea what the optimum would be. Thanks.
