Has anyone decided on the best strings for the Weis? I use George L's on my Steels and cobalts on my electric six strings. What are other players preferring? I am going for a clean sound.

	Bob Blair says: 12/13/2013 7:29:24 AM I much prefer phospher bronze strings for weiss. On my 25" scale instruments for the D tuning I eventually started using D'Addario EJ 42 resonator strings (high to low - 16, 18, 28, 35, 45, 56) and that is pretty much what I always do on my Benoit and my Celtic cross weissenborns. But on my Celtic Cross Kona (which is still pretty new to me - I've only changed strings a couple of times) I have been substituting a 15 for the 16 that comes with the EJ 42's. Carroll Benoit strings his cajunbornes up slightly heavier, but I wound up liking the lighter strings with mine and haven't used anything but EJ 42's for a couple of years. In my case I get the added convenience of having the same strings for my weissenborns and resos, and I can buy them by the fistful at a local music store. I change strings fairly frequently - every time I put new strings on an instrument I'm immediately glad I did.

RobA says: 12/15/2013 6:24:33 AM Seabass - like you, I'm hesitant to put thicker gauge strings on my vintage Weissenborn. I use the D'Addario EJ16s but I replace the 1st and 2nd strings with a .014 and .017 gauge plain steel string and I've been very happy with the results. Tony Francis recently turned me on to Asher Acoustic Hawaiian strings. The gauges seem ideal for a contemporary Weissenborn - .014-0.17-.028-.036-.046-.058 - and they sound great. My only complaint is that they're expensive! $11.00 a set
	Bob Blair says: 12/15/2013 8:57:50 AM Niels I somehow came into a couple of sets of coated reso strings - I can't remember for sure but I think they must have been the Elixir 16-56 reso set. They were fine - I used them on one of my Benoits and possibly on a weiss though the memory is hazy. I find the D'Addario strings are almost always available in decent quantity in the stores, and since I am a new string freak that has been an important factor for me.
