Tom Portman Biography Multi-instrumentalist, performer, composer and songwriter Tom Portman is based in the west of Ireland. Mainly playing the acoustic/electric guitar, Dobro & other strings. Over the past decade Tom has been a consistent eclectic and prolific force in Irish music. With 4 solo albums to his name, there’s a wide range to his work - from the Blues, Irish melodies, swing, rag time through bluegrass to Indian ragas. The Journey (2007), At One (2011), Float Your Blues Away (2013) all show case his talent with the Dobro, guitar and his deft songwriting. His latest release ‘White Crow’ (2015) in addition includes his multi instrumental writing for Violin, Mandolin and Banjo and Piano, Flute, Vocals & Double Bass. Portman’s music is becoming renowned both in Ireland and abroad. Recent years saw him tour Germany, Holland, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, France, Slovenia, Serbia, Hungry, Ireland, India and the Uk playing with a plethora of acts, in tandem with his own captivating one-man shows. Between 2015 and 2018 Tom did 6 rocking European tours with Louisiana slide player Dege Legg who’s music featured in Tarantino’s film ‘Django Unchained. With a musicianship appreciated by many artists, he’s supported the likes of Eric Bibb and Preston Reed. A long list of album collaborations offers a testament to his versatility and his Dobro playing on International feature film animation ‘The Ugly Duckling and Me” In recent years he’s also performed with award winning Polish Blues vocalist Magda Picroczyk, the talented Canadian song writer Doug Paisley and in Galway, Ireland frequently works with ex Charis front man John Conneely. In addition Portman teaches instrumental classes in Galway through the GTI and ‘Maoin Ceol’ School of Music and has given Dobro and Guitar workshops in the Belfast Metropolitan College, Galway Access Music Project and at the Krakow Blues Festival. ‘Sounds great; very interesting chord lines and use of space’.
