Dobro™ guitar player Frank Poindexter hails from the beautiful state of North Carolina! Born into a large musical family and took up the dobro as his choice of instruments after hearing Uncle Josh play with the great bluegrass icons, Flatt & Scruggs Foggy Mountain Boys. Here’s the way Frank puts it. “The voice & tone of this unique string instrument took hold of me and has never turned me loose”. “That lonesome growling tone can turn into the most smooth and relaxing element you’ve ever heard” and then crank out those lightning fast bluegrass numbers just as quick as a wink of the eye! Like Lester Flatt used to say about Martha White, “Goodness gracious, it’s good!” Frank, who happens to be the Uncle to the super guitar hero Tony Rice was playing live radio at the early age of 15. The group was called “The Carolina Rangers”, working at WLOE in Eden, North Carolina. A collector LP was put out on the Old Homestead Record label that featured Frank & Tony along with banjo player & singer Bobby Atkins called ’68 Session. This record, which is now out of print, has some incredible picking & singing on it, even considering today’s standards. Along with brothers Leon & Walt (The Poindexter Band) they landed a recording event with Capricorn records recording star, Richard Betts and was featured on his first solo record, Highway Call”. Following this recording, the Poindexter’s toured and performed with the All American Music tour that performed over the majority of the United States. Other players joining the Poindexter’s on this tour included Vassar Clements, John Hartford, and Larry Rice. Frank & Tony both landed a movie soundtrack recording deal on a film called “Preacherman”,with producer Albert T. Viola and was filmed in North Carolina. Frank formed a new band featuring Frank on guitar & dobro,Terry Baucom on banjo, Ben Greene mandolin and Randy Green on bass. After recording a project called “Poindexter, Baucom Green & Greene, was hired to play in Osaka Japan for an 8 day gig at the Portopia Hotel. This event included some live radio performances as well. Frank’s dobro playing can be heard on the Rice Brothers, Rounder Records collection as well as on several of Larry Rice solo projects on Rebel Records. Franks current solo release project”It’s The Music” on Dex records and available thru County Sales Records in Floyd, Virginia (www.countysales.com). “I use exclusively S.I.T stainless resophonic guitar strings for three big reasons, the tone, the life and the stay in tune feature!
