Recording gear for a tightwad

The only recording gear I have is a palm-corder and the audio on it sucks.  I have a computer obviously, but no mic.  I would like to make some reasonably good recordings with maybe some backup stuff.  AKSlider said he had a bit of trouble getting the hang of BIAB so that's probably over my head, but I'm also clueless on what to get.  All suggestions appreciated.
