Andy Smith started studying classical violin at age 7, and quickly became interested in Irish and bluegrass fiddling traditions. He played violin in various youth orchestras in Cleveland OH. He also won a scholarship to the Irish summer workshops at Augusta Heritage Center in West Virginia. Andy began playing mandolin and dobro in 2000, as well as expanding his fiddling to include Old-time Appalachian and Scottish styles. At the Kent State University he performed with the KSU orchestra while pursuing degrees in Latin and Greek. At Kent State University he regularly attended the KSU folk festivals, and this is where the love for all things banjo began, with clawhammer and bluegrass both being objects of obsession. Andy also builds his own banjos and is currently playing with the local bluegrass group River Ghost Revue. Andy teaches banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and dobro
