FISHOOK  #51All Koa  Resonator Guitar Reviews

Submitted by eldobro (see all reviews from this person) on 3/13/2009

Where Purchased: J.D.Myers Shop

Year Purchased: 2006
Price Paid: $1800. ($US)

Sound

For our purposes the Fishook is loud enough in a lot of cases to not even need to be amplified.Plenty of cutting through power in the treble and bass to match. The overall tone is even throughout the tonal range, balanced.Nothing offensive or lacking in tonal quality in any register.Subtle playing comes through as well as aggressive playing without WOWing out or breaking down.Whatever you can dish out ,it can take it and deliver either acoustically or amplified.I have a Macinyre pick up in there using an Ultrasound phantom powered preamp.I have never had to push it to be able to cut though even playing with a full band, drums, bass, lead guitar etc.
Condenser micing will always make it shine as well.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Set up was done as though I had pre selected a setup ,no adjustments necessary. The mastadon bone nut is hand carved and a perfect fit.

Appearance

My guitar is built from 200 year old ,old growth Koa that was salvaged from a hotel demolition project in Hawaii. The wood had hung as paneling for over 90 years and was already old for its size at the time of cutting back a the turn of the 20th. century.
Hand cut pearl inlay for the Nameplate and pearl position markers with a lot of color in them.Laminated three piece koa neck with curly maple binding and ebony face plate on the headstock.Nitro lacquer finish high gloss finish.

Reliability

This Dobro will outlast me and only sound better with age as all quality instruments of this caliber.I figure I will wear out before it does.I play it on all our gigs sometimes for hours at a time and it delivers tirelessly.I wish I could say the same for myself. It has never even broken a string while playing.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

The builder is a one man operation who pays attention to every detail and is always available for any questions I have had.Warranty is lifetime to the original owner and I suspect that if you showed up with a second hand instrument ,which would be hard to find, you would not be turned away ,as J.D. Myers backs up his workmanship, which I have yet to find a problem with.

Components

Hardware is all the state of the art resophonic ,nickle plated brass cover and sound hole covers.Spun aluminum cone with adjustable spider bridge.

Overall Comments

I would have a dozen if I could.I have personally bonded with this Dobro and it sounds like a Dobro should sound.
