Beard: Chrome Wave Capo

Submitted by Michael Hughes on 6/26/2012

Where Purchased: Steve Kaufman Acoustic Kamp

Overall Comments

Mike Witcher had some of Beard's new Wave capos for us reso students to try out at the Steve Kaufman Acoustic Kamp this year . No matter what capo I used in the past, I felt I lost some of the ring and sustain when I capoed up. I tried this new one and WOW! It's a good thing I had cash in my wallet because I told Mike I wasn't giving it back. This capo is SWEET! I gave up nothing in tone or sustain when I put it on.

Steve Kaufman Acoustic Kamp

Just got back from the 2012 Steve Kaufman Acoustic Kamp. This was my second year and the same instructors returned from 2011--MIke Witcher and Ivan Roseberg. The instructors did a great job of picking up where they had left off, just enough review for us to go "Oh yeah, I remember." I think I learned more this year than last, probably because I was at a higher level this year than last. As far as that goes, I noticed a definite improvement in the skill level of all the returning students.
In addition to getting some great insights from class, the staff concerts remain the best live entertainment I have ever attended. This year the concerts were in the gym (rather than the performing arts center like last year) but I was NOT disappointed by the change of venue. The setting was more intimate and the acoustics were actually better.
Maryville College campus was beautiful, and the jams were great.
I have already blocked off next year on my calendar.

Ferrell Stowe: JOSH

Submitted by Michael Hughes on 1/21/2012

Where Purchased: www.ferrellstowe.com

Overall Comments

Like the movie Inception where there is a dream within a dream, this album is one great Dobro player paying homage to the songs of another. Ferrell Stowe plays 12 songs he heard Josh Graves play and the result is truly a dream within a dream.

As great bluegrass musicians do, Ferrell shares the air with other great musicians for what comes off as a terrific instrumental jam. Here are the songs:
Randy Lynn Rag
Flatt Lonesome
Cannon Ball Blues
Cuttin' the Grass
FIreball Mail
Home Sweet Home
Fireball
What a Friend We Have in Jesus
Shuckin' the Corn
Goggy Mtn. Rock
Evelina
Maggie Blues/Maidens Prayer

I bought mine directly from Ferrell and he even inscribed it for me. What a class act. Every Dobro player should get his and her own copy!

There were two groups dedicated to the Reso at the 2011 Kamp, alternately taught by Ivan Rosenberg and Mike Witcher. The instruction was great, the Maryville College campus was the perfect venue, and the evening concerts were the best live entertainment I've ever heard. The instructors were excellent at gauging where you were in your skill and helping you take the next logical step. Staff, instructors, and fellow students were as nice a crowd as you could ever hope to hang out with. I'm making this camp an annual event for my enjoyment and my improvement.

Steve Kaufman: Four-Hour Bluegrass Workout

Submitted by Michael Hughes on 3/3/2011

Where Purchased: Online (Homespun)

Overall Comments

Steve has the right prescription here:
1) Provide sheet music of the basic tune
2) Play it slow
3) Play it fast

No tab for Dobro--which is a good thing. It let me concentrate on the basic melody line without any embellishments. Then I was free to add whatever personal styling or embellishments after that. A great repertoire of popular jam tunes.

Perfect for someone like me that came up in "folk" and needs to catch up on bluegrass.
