Dobro OMI: DM-1000

Submitted by Brad Bechtel on 5/13/2014

Where Purchased: eBay

Year Purchased: 2014
Price Paid: 750 ($US) (bought USED)

Sound

This is a relatively rare metal body Dobro® guitar, the top of the line instrument when it was built in 1983. The metal body gives it a louder sound with less sustain and warmth than a wood body guitar, but it still has the classic Dobro® sound to it.

Sound Rating: 8

Setup

The guitar was dusty, but set up well when I received it. I took off the cover plate and spent some time removing dust bunnies and grime. The cone is glued in place, so I did not try removing it. Otherwise the guitar is perfectly set up as received. The action is a bit lower than other squareneck guitars I own.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

It's a beautiful instrument, chrome plated brass with custom engraving and a Dobro® shield on the back. See my photos in my home page for examples.

Unfortunately my instrument had a dent in the lower right bout, which is probably why I got it for the price I did.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

The tuners and other hardware are top notch. I would not hesitate to use this at a gig.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

No experience with Dobro®, either when they were OMI (Original Musical Instruments) or after Gibson purchased them.

Components

All the components are the best they could be at the time.

Overall Comments

This isn't a guitar for every player.  Metal body guitars have a smaller audience than wood body guitars.  For what it is, it's a great guitar.  It sounds fine to me and will be a good addition to my arsenal of guitars.

Wechter Scheerhorn: 6510-F

Submitted by Brad Bechtel on 1/15/2013

Where Purchased: used via internet

Year Purchased: 2008
Price Paid: 500 ($US) (bought USED)

Sound

I play all kinds of acoustic music on my resonator guitars. I bought this from a well known player who supposedly used this particular guitar to win competitions. It is a very nice sounding instrument, loud and bright, with a clear tone. I have no problem taking it to jams and being heard.
If I had any knock on the sound, it's that the bass response is not as "sharp" as on the American handmade instruments. This is something I experience with all lower end dobros, though, and is not specific to this guitar.
This guitar has a more modern sound than the traditional Dobro® sound you'll get from other guitars. It resembles the sound of a hand built Scheerhorn, but doesn't quite have the tonal richness or complexity. Still, it's a great instrument, especially for the price.

Setup

The 6510F was set up perfectly when I received it. I played it for about two years before I took it to Resosummit in 2010. While there, I had Tim Scheerhorn upgrade the cone to his latest hand spun cone and do a general setup. His upgrade and setup improved the sound of the instrument, making it even louder and clearer. I would recommend his work without hesitation.

Setup Rating: 9

Appearance

There were no finish flaws in the instrument. I've since managed to put a small ding in one of the upper bouts by dropping a bar on it, but it's very tiny. The finish is well done and the guitar overall looks very good. People remark on the instrument whenever I take it to jams.

Reliability

The tuners are the weakest link on this instrument. They hold the tuning well enough, but sometimes it feels like they're kind of crusty and make squeaky noises when tuning. I don't find them to be enough of a problem for me to go to the trouble of replacing them.
Everything else has been trouble free.

Reliability Rating: 7

Customer Service

No experience with the company at all. I never needed to contact them about this instrument.

Components

The guitar is a great deal, with excellent components throughout. The tuners would be the weakest link on my particular instrument, yet they hold the tuning exactly where you want it to be.
I chose to upgrade the cone because I had the opportunity to have Tim Scheerhorn work on the instrument directly. I would have been very happy with the instrument as it was, but his upgraded cone made this a much better sounding instrument.

Overall Comments

The Wechter Scheerhorn line is one of the best values in resonator guitars under $1000 (the other being the Goldtone Beard series). It comes down to which type of sound you prefer. If I had gotten a similar deal on a Goldtone Beard, I might have been playing that instead of this. I don't ever regret buying this guitar or wish I had gotten something else.
I have no issues with showing up with this guitar in any jam or session I'm involved in. It's a great sounding instrument and plays very well.
I have no hesitation in recommending this instrument, or indeed any of the Wechter Scheerhorn resonator guitars.
