Mosco String Works: Cowee Large Body NO. 038

Submitted by SMenasco on 2/4/2018

Where Purchased: From Builder Peter Mosco

Year Purchased: 2018
Price Paid: Under $3000 ($US)

Sound

I play mostly old country. I used a Myers pickup with a small Beherinson amp. The guitar is loud, has a great tone and long sustain. I am completely satisfied.

Sound Rating: 9

Setup

The guitar was set up by Peter Mosco and is very satisfactory. I have not made any set up changes.

Setup Rating: 9

Appearance

The guitar is a highly flamed solid maple with an ebony fretboard. The glossy black finish is flawless with a black on black burst around the sides, sanded in the middle of the top and back to accent the grain of the wood. It has Mother of Pearl binding around the top, both sides of the neck and around the peghead. The inlaid fret markers and frets are Mother of Pearl. The F holes were designed by Peter Mosco with MOP dots on either side of the F holes. The cover plate and tailpiece is a carbon fiber-looking gray color. It has a Beard Legend cone, No. 14 spider and Planet Wave locking tuning machines.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

The hardware is top[ of the line, finish is excellent and I look forward to many years of playing this instrument without any problems.

Peter Mosco is probably one of the most underrated luthiers around. He is very agreeable and easy to work with. He builds a top notch guitar at a reasonable price, considering the amount of work and care he puts into the product.

Macon Stringed Instruments Co.: Macon Maple Large Body

Submitted by SMenasco on 4/2/2017

Where Purchased: Macon Stringed Instruments

Year Purchased: 2017
Price Paid: 2000+ ($US)

Sound

The sound is exactly what I was expecting; very loud, or subdued should it be played in that manner. The tone is rich, clean and bell-like. The sustain is very good and the notes played above the twelveth fret are clean. I am very pleased with the results of the construction and the outcome of the endeavor.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

The setup was done extremely well. There is no foreign noise, vibration or rattling.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

The guitar is solid maple, highly figured with the grain showing very well. The finish is a high gloss beautiful red orange, is very bright and perfectly done. The ebony fret board has inlaid frets and exotic fret markers, all mother of pearl, that glistens when the light hits it. In my opinion, the inlaid mother of pearl sets this guitar off in a league of its own. It has a darker very slight burst around the top, sides and back. The whole guitar exhibits a "wet" look. I am totally pleased with the end result. It is on par with other high quality guitars, like my Ida Red, Red Line Peabody.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

All the hardwear is high quality, with none expected to fail. The finish appears to be of the caliber to last for a very long time. All main parts are high quality domestic, such as the Legend cone, poinsettia cover plate and Red Line Resophonics aluminum alloy spider.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

Peter is very cordial to work with and tries very hard to please. Every request prior to starting the build was agreed to in a very professional manner. A specific warranty was not discussed. However, should the guitar develop a problem, I have no doubt Peter would favorably address the issue quickly.

Components

I know of no weak or cheap parts were used in this construction. The most significant thing about this guitar is the look of the dark ebony fret board and mother of pearl inlaid frets and inlaid fret markers against the bright red orange finish. It is just spectacular!

Overall Comments

This Macon guitar is outstanding in every way.  The bright red orange finish was applied in a superb manner without runs or blemishes and has no flaws.  It can be very loud and has great sustain.  The tone is true all the way up the neck.  The mother of pearl inlays were the absolute best choice.  I have no negative comments.  I would certainly buy this guitar again.  Peter Mosco did a superb job building this guitar for me.  I just do not think it could have turned out any better!

Myers : Pickup With Preamp

Submitted by SMenasco on 5/24/2014

Where Purchased: On Line at Myersco

Overall Comments

I cam across this little pickup and ordered one to compare to my built in pickup.  It is a preamp with a 1/4" jack and 4" gooseneck mic.  I tried it with my Behringer Ultracoustic ACH450 amp and it sounds great with virtually no feedback.  It cam be moved to other guitars since it mounts with a suction cup.  I compared it to my built in K&K pickup and it sounds just as good.  Now I have a ipckup with a built in preamp and have no external preamp to mess with and only one cord.  It has an internal lithium battery that the manufacturer says will power it for hundreds of hours. The battery can be replaced by removing two small screws.  Would I purchase it again?  You bet!

Jimmy Heffernan DR Strings: DR Strings

Submitted by SMenasco on 4/4/2014

Where Purchased: Jimmy Heffernan

Overall Comments

I have been attending Jams and playing in a band and was changing strings every week or so.  While viewing this site, I saw a post by Jimmy Heffernan talking about DR strings and how they sound, and that they retain their clarity longer than most strings on the market.  I ordered some to see if they really were worth the difference.  I was not disappointed.  These strings sound great after several weeks of beating the pi....  out of them.  I recently ordered more and experienced a slight problem.  Jimmy was right there, immediately, to solve the problem.  GREAT product and GREAT customer service!  You won't regret doing business with Jimmy!

K&K Spider Bridge Pickup: K&K Spider Bridge Pickup

Submitted by SMenasco on 5/23/2012

Where Purchased: Red Line Resophonics or K&K Sound

Overall Comments

I have a Red Line Peabody Pro and have recently been playing where amplification is necessary and just installed a K&K pickup. The K&K pickup was a breeze to install, It mounts on the screw on the bottom of the cone and sounds fantastic! I was really pleased with the sound. And there's no need for a preamp. Just plug and play. I have a strap lock and was just a little concerned about drilling a hole in Ida Red, but it turned out fine. K&K's customer service is several notches above average and you can't beat the price; under $100.

Red Line Resophonics: THE PEABODY PRO #58

Submitted by SMenasco on 8/13/2011

Where Purchased: Red Line Resophonics

Year Purchased: 8/2011
Price Paid: <3000 ($US)

Sound

The sound is rich and tone is magnificent! Sustain is long. Sound is somewhere between old school and modern. It fits my desired genre of old country extremely well.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Set up is superb. No buzzing, rattling or any other distracting noises. Only crisp, clear tone, one of the best I have heard. Notes are clear and in tune at every fret up the board.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

This reso is solid maple, maple neck with comfortable beveled neck edges (nice finish touch) with beautiful grain showing, with the red line down the back. The finish is a fairly dark pomegranate red with a black burst around the edges, which turned out beautiful. The ebony fret board is one of the blackest I have seen and the white inlaid frets and white neck binding really add to the professional look. One of the best features are the inlaid diamond slotted square markers on the fret board, replacing standard inlaid dots. These diamond squares add a plush look to the whole guitar. There are absolutely no flaws in the finish, joints or inlays. The finish has 21 coats of lacquer. If I had to dsecribe the guitar in one word, it would have to be "rich."

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

The tuning machines appear to be top of the line and all the hardward is U. S. made. I would take this guitar anywhere without a backup, but would keep it close. A thief could not resist this work of art and it would be stolen in a minute.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

Steve Smith and his crew were extremely easy to deal with, always returned my calls and responded to requests for information and photos of the build as it proceeded. I would recommend these people to anyone without hesitation. I consider them artists instead of instrument builders.

Customer Service: 10

Components

I have no comment on any one component, The entire unit is flawless, constructed with care and precision. Even the Red Line logo on the head stock is of a design that adds to the overall professional look of the piece.

Components Rating: 10

Overall Comments

This unit was constructed from scratch to delivery in approximately six weeks, with no unfulfilled expectations or promises. The Red Line group delivers what they say they will, when they say, at a professional level of craftsmanship that I doubt would be surpassed by any instrument builder, at a more than reasonable price for what is delivered.
