I have heard this tune, Steel Rails, from Alison Krauss a few times before, but I never saw this video. The reso player sure sounds like JD, but who's the reso player in the video? Some stand-in? This is from 1990, which is eight years before JD joined Union Station. I recognize Tim Stafford on guitar, but that's about it.
Discographies list JD on dobro and Jeff White on guitar on this album: "I've Got That Old Feeling".
I believe JD produced her first album "Too late to Cry". I know he played on that one too.
I believe you are right: Prolly just a stand-in to make the lip synch look good (better).
It's all good.
I think it's a stand-in for Jerry and were I a betting man I would put down money that it's Sidney Cox, but he had more hair back then.
Along with backing vocals, guitar, and mandolin, Sidney played some dobro on this year's Alison tour and his sister Suzanne was on backing vocals. I saw them at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park in October.
The Cox family has had a long association with Alison going back to the early days of her career.
For not being that "ancient," at least on my laptop screen, that video looks pretty "grainy." Not easy to tell who everyone is. I do recognize an additional pair of original Union Station members - Adam Steffey on mandolin, and Alison Brown on guitar (who would usually be on banjo).
What are the odds of two ladies named Alison in the same music group? And spelled with only one L rather than the more common two L's?
