I would be interested in comments related to the Fender FR 50 resonator. Would it be a reasonable starter instrument?

If you Google the guitar there are some reviews. Personally I like some of the other lower end brands better like Recording King and Regal. There is a used one at Guitar Center for $269.00 and one on Ebay for $225.00.  There are also some videos of the guitar so you can hear one.

Martin, as a new member when you are asking for guitar purchasing  advice on Resohangout, it's a good idea to specify if you are searching for a roundneck guitar for standard "Spanish style" playing, or if you're seeking a squareneck guitar for lap style.

In the case of the no longer made FR50, they were available with either round or square necks.

No, it's a crap. It was my first resonator, a round neck. I've put a bone homemade high nut on it to play "dobro style" but it's not resonant at all. The spider is ordinary and the cone is stamped, it has not the sound of a bell when you knock it.

I bought a Quarterman 10.5" cone to put in it and improve the sound but the better sound I get was with the Beard cone & spider that were in my Gold Tone which received the Quarterman with an adjustable Beard #14 spider.

It doubles the price of the Fender and for such the same price I could have had a GoldTone PBS.

@GeoBar , @MarkinSonoma and resoranger thank you to all who responded. I am grateful for your advice. I will be more specific if there are any further inquiries.

Wonderful to know that there are very giving people who are willing g to share.

I will continue my search for a resonator.

Happy holidays to you all.

That Fender is about the bottom of the barrel imo, there are much better choices as have already been pointed out. I know that low price looks tempting but you really need to spend at least twice that much to get something decent, barring a super good used deal.
