Hello! I’m brand new here to Reso Hangout and I could sure use some help. Recently purchased a Beard Vintage R on Reverb. I love these dobros, but the seller told me the pickup was a Fishman Model; he just wasn’t sure which one. I went out on a limb and bought it - hoping for the Nashville model but thinking I could live with the older passive resophonic pick up for a little while. I don’t really mind the input jack on the tailpiece, but I’m fairly certain this pickup isn’t made by Fishman. It appears to just be some sort of adhesive strip applied to the back of the bridge. I’m hoping I’m wrong, but any insight into what this is would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
It's a Pickup the World resonator pickup.
I've never come across one in the wild myself, but the scuttlebutt over the years is that they don't sound so great. If it did, for 135 bucks a lot of players would have them rather than forking out the big dough for the Fishman Nashville in combination with the Jerry Douglas Aura pedal.
What's weird - I hadn't realized this in the past - they are about 45 minutes south of me in Corte Madera in Marin County.
I'm assuming you have plugged it in by now? What do you think - especially in comparison to a guitar equipped with the Nashville pickup?
MarkinSonoma Thank you! I probably would have never found that. As far as sound, I’d agree it’s not great, but also not the worst I’ve heard. I did actually briefly do a side by side with the Nashville pickup in my other reso. There is really no comparison between the two. The Nashville pickup has much more depth and clarity and is significantly louder. The balance between strings is a little suspect as well on the Pickup the World pup. The only advantage I can see with this pickup would be the ease of installation. Thanks again for the info!
