Well this needs a whole lot of clean up.... this is my arrangement of gold rush, which worked out similar in concept to melodic banjo. Comments or advice welcome
You’re really learning fast, I’m impressed! Now would be a good time to concentrate on basic techniques that will take your playing to the next level and beyond. I’m hearing a lot of notes all running together instead of clean note separation like Tony Rice plays Gold Rush. Playing clean single note runs on fiddle tunes involves a lot of muting, blocking and damping with both hands and takes time and a lot of practice but really is worth it. Good job and thanks for sharing.
Thanks Greg! I noticed the lack of not separation but I don't know how to fix it, what specific techniques should I practice and do you have any exercises I should do?
I agree with Greg that you are really coming along and making great strides in your playing, with real creativity and musicality. Two suggestions that may help you with note separation: first, on fast notey tunes like Gold Rush, try picking a little closer to the bridge with your right hand. The notes decay faster there and are less mellow, thus they don’t ring over each other quite so much. Second, although it’s hard to see on your video, you may want to experiment with keeping more left hand fingers down on the strings behind the bar. Although it’s harder to do on faster numbers where you are moving the bar quickly, it can help reduce the ringing of strings after you play them especially as you pull the bar back toward you, so that your fingers extending beyond the bar will mute the strings you are no longer picking. This is one aspect of the muting or blocking that Greg mentioned. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Andy! I'll work on that!
