Recently got a new resonator and it has the weirdest issue... when I push forward with the thumb pick, the notes are strong and full, but when I pull back with the finger picks, the notes are thin, quiet and buzzy. This isn’t a technique thing. It doesn’t happen to me on any other resonator I’ve played. I’m about to take it to my local shop. I assume they’ll be able to diagnose and fix the issue, but for my own edification... what’s going on here?
Does it do the same with a flat pick?
Yes, if you pick sort of upwards with it rather than straight across. BUT...
Problem solved. Took it in. My tech measured the string gauges and found that the builder had, for some reason, put lighter strings for the top three strings than what he normally does. Changed the top three strings to the spec the builder normally uses and now it sounds and plays like a dream. A little weird. Don’t exactly understand why it left the factory like that. But fortunately a simple solution.
