I got my new Byrl Reso last week and thought I would post some pictures. Byrl is great to work with and built exactly what I wanted. It is an incredible instrument!

That sure is one fine looking instrument. What kinds of wood? And of course we need sound bites. Cheers!

Beautiful! Koa? A great week for new resos!

I have talked to Byrl in the past about having a new custom guitar built and he was great to talk to. I ended up going a different route and builder, but there is no doubt he could have delivered!

Wow!! That is stunning! Did you decide on the woods used? Nice choices for sure!

Thanks for the compliments guys. I did pick the wood. It is saman, aka raintree, or more commonly known as monkey pod. Byrl chose the wood for the neck. It is monkey pod, mahogany, and quilted maple. The fretboard is gaboon ebony. I had him inlay a lyre emblem in the headstock to honor Dobro which had a lyre emblem in their logo. I couldn't be happier with it.

Samanea saman from the pea family (Fabaceae).

I have seen these trees in Mexico.

Pretty spectacular wood on this one - almost too much! Though I think I could get used to it. wink

I like the shape of the headstock. I don't care for the somewhat pointed version that I have seen on some Byrls.

And a DoubleShot to cap it off. Does it have a pickup?

This guitar must have cost a pretty penny.

I believe the scientific name is albizia saman of which samanea saman is synonymous. Most people know it as monkey pod. This particular wood came from Hawaii. It does have the Fishman pickup installed. I got that so I could use a Tonewood Amp. They are very neat. The fretboard is a 21 fret instead of the most common 19 fret. The headstock on this instrument is the one Byrl uses on his shallow body guitars. I like it better, too. He has 3 different headstocks; the shallow body, the one he uses on his deep body (that you were referring to), and the Super Sport series. He builds some of the best resonator guitars I've seen all by hand. Nothing is automated or set up for any kind of mass production. Great guy, too! And yes, it was a little expensive.

Rick,
I meant to ask you how you like the one (was it cotton wood)? that Byrl auctioned off. Would like to here sound bites of them both. :)

The People's Choice 2020 dobro that I got from the auction is spalted hackberry with a quilted maple top. I love them both. I'll have to figure out how to post a couple of sound bites in the near future. I don't have a mic or any recording equipment, it would just be from a smart phone.

Nice looking reso!

What is the purpose of the side holes? And what was the cost of the guitar?

The side holes are what Byrl calls sound forward holes. They let some sound out of the front of the instrument toward your audience and so you could share a mic, if needed, with an instrument not played horizontally. They seem to give a more big or open sound. The cost of Byrl's instruments seem comparable to other custom builders. I'm completely sold on them. I wanted a lot of special features on this instrument since it will most likely be the last one I buy and the only custom built one I've ever had.
