Hi, I have an interest in purchasing a Beard “Lotus” cover plate for my Clinesmith reso. I found that it is no longer available. Does anyone know of another one for sale somewhere?

Hello,

Before looking for a replacement, think about your instrument. Not all cover plates are the same. What do I mean? Not all instruments models are the same.

My OMI cover plate cannot match any modern spacing. Invariably, several holes don’t line up. Then a quandary happens. Modify the instrument or the cover plate? ISO 9001, Deming, and QC are modern guides.

The past is fraught with guesswork and approximations. An instrument wasn’t expected to be bling’d out. It is its own unique setup. If worn out, buy a new one. Consider carefully.

As far as I am aware the Beard & OMI coverplates mounting is identical. It gets MUCH dicier with many imports. The pattern is slightly different and the mounting holes use a smaller sized screw.

As far as the Lotus plate, I've found it to be the most restrictive design in terms of acoustic projection. It was designed before Paul started to use sophisticated calculations which involved open/closed spaces and space positioning.

fwiw and my recollection.

I don't have the knowledge or experience that Howard has about the development of the lotus coverplate, but I concurrently owned two Beard Mike Auldridge instruments - an early (black) model with standard coverplate, and a later one (red sunburst) with the lotus. The lotus never had the astonishing sound quality of the older version. Not even close. I never considered that it might be a function of the coverplate, and blamed it instead on the difference in finish.

Let me double down and reinforce that I'm expressing my personal opinion. Others might well hear differently.

Your red MA may magically "open up" one day!!

It just occurred to me that you might not have both today but, if you do, try swapping the coverplates as an experiment??

Both MAS were sold years ago, and I'm so sorry I didn't try a coverplate switch. The red 'burst was visually stunning! Unfortunately, I didn't sound like Mike on either instrument...

I gave up trying to sound like Mike years ago. That goal would have been attainable through intense practice, but I would never have matched his the cool onstage demeanor.

Matthew, if you do manage to locate a Lotus - or some other custom Beard coverplate for your Clinesmith, I am reasonably sure the the screw pattern will be fine.

I was visiting Todd in Oregon 4-5 years ago. I brought him my Clinesmith for some work and he was also in the process of building me an 8 string lap steel.

His steel guitars have dominated his workload for several years but he still builds some resonators.

He told me during the visit that he had been getting his coverplates from Beard for a number of years.

I replaced the Fan coverplate on my Clinesmith to a Lyre a year or so ago. I remember it sounding a bit louder and more open. I don't recall having any problem with the screw holes.
