A few months back I picked up a 1993 Hound Dog. I picked it up cheap to flip but I keep playing it. I think I'll keep it. It has a huge fat sound compared to others I have owned.
I would like to determine if it was made before or after the sale to Gibson. I realize there probably weren't any substantive changes in the first few months, I just would like to know where this one fell in the timeline.
The serial number reads 4 142 93 H. There is also an "R" stamped just before and above "93". It could be a reject I suppose!
I assume the 142 is a sequential number for the year but I don't know where in the year it might place it. From what I was told by a former Gibson employee, times were pretty tough in the last days of OMI, and not many instruments were produced.
Thank you for any help you can offer.
You left out an important item - is this a roundneck or a squareneck? I assume round because as I recall they would add the "R" to designate it as such.
I can try to get a hold of Mike Replogle who was appointed by Gibson to run the show around that time and see if he has any insight.
It’s a round neck.
That was my first Resonator, mine sounded great too, don't really remember why i let it go but i regret it. Enjoy that thing in good health. Its pre Gibson, barely, not sure exactly what that means though as ive seen some real dogs from the '70s and some absolute killers from the mid to late '90s.
Oh yeah, i just got a '94 model 33 that is a killer, i can't imagine how it can be better.
