SPBGMA is or at least was a slightly smaller version of IBMA's fanfest. In the hotel lobby, there are maybe a dozen different groups all jamming within sight and two different rooms full of trade show, then the main stage there by the lobby and several sponsored stages/rooms in other places simultaneously. I don't remember workshops but the whole thing is pretty awesome. I may go last minute if I can pull it off.
I've never been able to figure out what the deal is with the SPBGMA.
Was it started as an alternative to the IBMA?
For example the awards category. Tim Graves has won Dobro Player of the Year a bunch of times, and he's never in the top five nominees for the IBMA. And his band, the Farmhands seem to always pick up some trophies.
Tim is a fine player, but it seems weird that there is no crossover between the two associations.

SPBGMA (Society for the preservation of Bluegrass music in America, or something like that) is independent of the IBMA. The awards don't make much sense to me either, but neither do the IBMA awards most of the time... I don't know if it was originally an alternative to IBMA, but this year it certainly is, and a good one at that.
Not sure about Tim Graves winning... he possibly has some association with the organization of SPBGMA? I know he hosted the awards ceremony last time around and his band was there. He had a Dobro for sale at his band's table too... he was very nice.
I realize it's independent of the IBMA, and I have looked at the lists of the award winners over the years and there are definitely some of the same names as winners between both organizations.
I believe Tim Graves has won for Dobro 10 times. I would have to go back and look - I'm not sure Jerry Douglas has ever even won.
And there's the separate Midwest/Missouri aspect. There are a lot of musicians listed there as nominees and winners that I'm pretty sure most of us here have never heard of.

BTW, I don't see any list of the workshops on their website....what kind of workshops do they usually have?
SPBGMA was started in 1974, IBMA in 1985. So SPBGMA is a predecessor to IBMA.
